How to confirm serial number for CSX?
I am researching an "original" CSX 1963 289. I can view the ID Tag in the engine compartment on the right front wheel well. How do I determine if it is the actual car that the serial number says it is?

You can check the car's history in the SAAC World Registry.

To add to Ron's comments, the serial number on 289 Cobras are located in several places including the frame. Those should also be checked as reproduction footbox tags have been produced.

Thank you both so much.....I will check the SAAC registry.
Where do you look on the frame? Front, rear, inside....awfully new to this!

It can be viewed from the engine compartment looking down on the right hand side. It is stamped on the top of the rear bracket for the right front control arm, right where the bracket is welded to the frame. It may need to be cleaned off to view.
I would suggest you enlist expert help in reviewing one of these cars if you are not well versed in Cobras.

There are several location for the serial number to include each door, hood latch, boot latch, rear cockpit panel, underside of tunnel. I only mentioned the frame location

I should add that if you are speaking about a worm & sector car instead of a rack and pinion car, the serial number is on the left side on a frame bracket.

Beware replacement and or "air" cars are out in the world also. Some new cars replicate originals so closely knowledge of small build details is required to sort out original versus all else. I looked over a 427 Cobra replica that was so detailed the only obvious detail that stuck out was a custom chassis number nothing like a real 427 Cobras and about 18 digits long. Even the chassis welding looked like 1960s work but the car was made in the 1990s.
As been suggested, check with Ned and or take a knowledge person with you. More than one person has paid top genuine car dollar to then found that a serial number was attached to a replica of some sort.

I understood SOME of the hood hinges got mixed up and the numbers may not match the chassis on some cars?

I'm sure you meant to say latches and not hinges.
Not uncommon for latches to get mixed if two cars are in paint shops at the same time. Or restoration shop replaces original old with reproduction new and doesn't know (or care) that the latch has numbers stamped on it.

Actually I did mean to say hinges, as in the front. Thanks for the correction, I would assume from that the hinges did not bear a CSX number, only the latches.

You would be correct, except it would one of the latches on the bonnet, and of course the boot latch. Normally it is the driver's side on the bonnet.
