Run Big Block FE Valve Covers on your Small Block Ford!
FE valve cover adapters for the small block Ford head are now available. These valve cover adapters are intended to adapt Ford FE valve covers to standard Ford 289/302/351W cylinder heads. Bolting on a pair of FE pentroof valve covers will greatly enhance the appearance of the engine compartment of your Cobra replica. These adapters have been produced from quality aluminum plate and CNC machined to close tolerances. These adapters have been designed to work primarily with cast aluminum Ford Motorsports FE valve covers and have been tested successfully with cast covers available from T. Branda and others. Roller rockers on standard cylinder heads should clear nicely. These adapters may also be used with the chromed stamped steel pentroof valve covers available from T. Branda and others but in certain cases the bolt holes in those covers may need to be slightly elongated to fit the mounting studs. This is a problem with the stamped steel covers, not the adapter plates. Non-standard heads like Twisted Wedge have not been tested. Also, these adapters have not been tested with stud girdles or on EFI equipped cars.
A cast aluminum FE valve cover was measured with adapter on a small block engine and found to have an approximate installed height of 5-5/8". This adapter and FE valve cover setup would probably not clear an EFI intake unless you installed a spacer between the upper and lower intake halves. If anyone purchases these adapters for use on an EFI engine they do so at their own risk.
These adapter plates are now available in limited quantities. The selling price is $100 per set plus actual shipping charges. Most small block guys love there small blocks and dislike big blocks thus may not care what there engines look like when they open the hood.

SuperHart, looks to me like your on your way to some mighty fine FE valve cover 'O ring' type head gaskets, a fella down the street had a set of S/B chebby valve cover gaskets that looked something like you have here except, there was a rubber gasket embedded in the aluminum (top an bottom) which, he says are virtually leak proof. Any chance you can fabricate that for us FE guys?.

To Perry Henry, thus far there hasn't seemed to be a need for O-ringing as long as quality rubberized gaskets are used.
For Tony R., all I can say is that if the valve geometry of the Victor Junior head is the same as a stock head (no canted valves or stud girdles) and the stock small block valve cover fits, then these adapters should work fine. I have a 427 W with track heat Al heads and am in the process of buying adapters to raise my valve covers over the gold roller rockers. I have already purchased my valve covers, so I am getting a "straight thru" small block adapter.
you need to put a set of these on EBAY so the world will know they are available. pretty neat product, with the turkey pan, single 4V and 60s overflow, people would have to look twice to see that it was not a "bb" race motor.

The sound alone will let all around know that it's a small block, and most I find at even the "church/parking lot" shows will know that it's not a big block. The 35 or younger FFR crowd might go for this item , or at least I think they will.

I realize that this concept may appear "deceptive" to some and "silly" to others but to me it represents another expression of creativity that makes these cars so interesting and so much fun.
I personally did not want the expense, extra weight, and outrageous horse power of the 427SO in my car but I DID want the LOOK. Developing these adapters in conjunction with the builder of my car is a stepping stone in that direction. I supplied the design, he supplied the materials sources. Nothing looks sexier than a dual quad setup nestled between those distinctive pentroof valve covers. I am modifying a 351W Offenhauser 360* intake for dual quads since no one makes a dual quad intake for the 351W. There will be a pair of Holleys mounted backwards, original type carb linkage, coolant expansion tank, and the pentroof covers to complete the picture.
COMING THIS WEEKEND: additional photos of the adapters mounted on a amall block cylinder head showing all angles of the installation plus photos of the completed installation on the 351W in my car. I can't do it sooner since I am recovering from Coronary Artery Bypass surgery nd the Warden (my wife) refuses to allow me in the garage for any reason until I am released by the surgeon on Friday.

i just wanted a 427
i will have one with my 427 windsor which will be a lot lighter than an FE. i even had a guy at work said he would trade me a 460 for my 302 spare motor.
i just read so many horror stories about the FE having problem with the front bearing not getting enough oil etc. i just wanted the best for my hot rod.
someone said i have a cobra what does it matter what brand it is?
well it mattered to me alot. i did a lot of research before i found B&B had the best bang for the buck with their dropped floor pans, x frame 2x4 construction and thick fiberglass handlaid that you did not have to prop up or brace any time you took the body off. it is almost seamless, i hear these horror stories about people having to fix seams and i thank the good lord i am not in that boat.
i would have liked to have purchased their narrowed 9" rear end, but i could not afford it right now and they made the brackets to fit my 8.8 tbird rear end. they have worked with me in every aspect of my build even though i did not purchase all my parts from them.
as to the sound, i have a 302 GT mustang that scares the neighbors with its v8 rumble. i have to put it in overdrive and get off the gas whenever the cops are around. a ford v8 is a ford v8 whether it be a 265 or a 460.

Jeff, I'm not sure I follow what you want? Sheet metal valve covers? Sheet metal adapters? These adapters should work with any valve cover that would fit a Ford FE head.

Yes the chrome stamped sheetmetal covers. The reason I ask is because they have a channel for the gasket to fit into., they are not flat like the cast alluminum ones.
Again I'm guessing but am pretty sure this is what most people want, not the aluminum ones. If an engine has the chrome sheetmetal covers, there is no doubt in anybodies mind that it is a 427 and not a 428. 428's never used the chrome covers.

NOW I gotcha. Although I don't have a photo handy of the stamped steel valve cover I DO know that the adapters work with them. When the adapters were designed we were careful to cut the outer edge to exactly fit the gasket so the "lip" on the outer edge of the stamped valve cover would not hang up and prevent a good seal. The lip of the stamped cover actually fits over the edge of the adapter
When we tested the stamped valve covers the pair we got our hands on were repros from Tony Branda. Strangely enough, the bolt holes on the cast covers from Ford Motorsports and Tony Branda we tried fit an FE motor exactly but the two pairs of stamped steel covers had two bolt holes slightly misaligned so that the holes had to be slightly elongated to fit the FE head. We therefore used the cast covers to locate the mounting studs on the adapter figuring it would be easier to elongate holes in a stamped steel cover than a cast cover. Even when the holes were elongated the washer under the valve cover bolt covered the elongated hole nicely.

my guess too as the competiton 427 had the sheet metal chrome and a single 4V with the turkey pan.
from looking at the photos i dont think your adapters will work with trick flow twisted wedge heads using crane gold rollers.
i have my heads on my desk at work, i will take a photo monday and post. the clearance is really tight.
do you think FIA outlawed 427 motors in 1967 because they were embarassed that Ferrari got his ass beat or was that the beginning of the CS bashing?

I have edelbrock performer rpm heads with comp roller rockers. On a 351 windsor. (Currently have ford racing valve covers.) Do you think that the spacers will fit them. If so I am willing to give them a try!

Steve, although I do not have photos of this installation, I have a set of these adapters running on the same heads you mention and the owner is as happy as a clam. These adapters will work on ANY small block Ford head that has standard valve train geometry (no canted valves or rocker girdles). You can see in the above photos that I am running Crane 1.7 ratio roller rockers with no interferenceon a set of GT40P heads. The Edelbrock heads supposedly have the same valve train setup. All I know is that the guy who bought the adapters has a 392 stroker motor with Edelbrock RPM heads and Crane roller rockers and told me that the adapters work perfectly.
