I thought , a 240 then 260 289 390 427 428 anyway ,

I recently went for a NOS 427 S.o. w/ optional nascar crank and rods a little less then twenty five .
My only regret is , the car now requires a more carful driver

cobras had only 289's and 427s, the first car may have had a 260, but no 240s, 390s, or 428s. the asking price may seem a little high, but that depends on the buyer. you can't find a new 427 anywhere, this motor is for a special car that is built to all orignal specs. I love 427s, it is why I am a ford fanatic today. But I do a lot of street racing and the original engines become grenades after pumping them up to about 800 hp. I am thinking about building a 700 cu. in. Blown big block cobra with about 1300 hp. only thing is I don't know who's going to drive it. we have a lot of bad street chevys where I'm at, some are capable of running high 7's in street trim. have to build a ford that will kick their butts.

Original Cobras DID have 260 c.i. engines CSX 2000-2074. Then 289 c.i. engines in CSX 2075-2589. However, CSX 2196, The "Flip Top" Cobra, also known as "The Turd" did have an aluminum 390 c.i. engine. There WERE 428 c.i. Cobras, CSX 3201-3299. I have 3288 with its original "428 Police Interceptor" engine. CSX 3001-3055, 3063, 3101-3200, and 3300-3360 had 427 c.i engines. Reference --1997 SAAC Registry.

what years were those cars built ? I have never read about the 390 aluminum engine nor a 428, but i surely don't know it all, I thought the car was a AC 427.

Default It cost Wow much??

First modern Ford V8 was 221 cubic inches, Shelby got one of the VERY new "pumped up" 221 to 260 cid for his project. Possibly the first application of the 260 in any "Ford".

The alloy 390 in the "Flip Top" (Turd because of it's lack luster performance) is the only referrence I've ever heard of for that motor. Surely they built more than one? What other cars had them???

The 428 Cobras still had the 427 emblem at first. I understand there was some confusion on the issue, some complaints and some had the 428 exchanged in favor of the 427. Seems like "cost" was the big factor with going to 428. Hmmmm,,,,some things never change! Cost of the 427 is STILL a big factor, LOL.

EDIT: I THOUGHT I was pretty smart about "cars" and stuff until I started hanging with this bunch. It's amazing how much knowledge there is within Club Cobra. Sometimes I'm like, "How in the heck did they KNOW THAT?" This is THE most knowledgable group of gear heads I have ever found ANYWHERE.

Didn't Carroll later fit a couple with a 351C? Not part of the original run but original cars fitted with a different engine.

Super Kit Car

Have you been able to determine for sure what the history on that engine is? Somebody commented that the NASCAR rods were HUGE, which then made me wonder how they are different (or not) than the more "common" LeMans rods.

yes it is a nascar motor, I confirmed with the original owner yesterday. he is trying to find his original reciept. I posted some of the part #s, here they are again. on the block right side front inverted 87 352, on piston sidewall front right 12 DIP, inside oil gallery 427 26, on rear of block P 66-427, pistons C5AE-6110-AU, heads C4AE 0D10 6090F , other head C4AE 130 6090F, intake valves C8AX-6507-A, exhaust C8AX-6505-A. the short block came assymblied and I don't want to touch it. will see if I can get #s off the rods without taking the bottom end apart. the intake must be a marine tunnel wedge, but was for medium riser heads.

The easiest way to determine if it is a Nascar rotating assembly is
to check the rods & crank. These use wider rod bearings and are visually different (wider) than standard lemans.

Just a note concerning all older stuff. It was the best they had back in 65-67 but is inferior to standard racing equipment today.
It might be neat to say you run "Nascar" crank & Rods but other than that I wouldn't trust 37 year old equipment to hight rpm duty. This is not my opinion but that of the head of Shelby's own engine shop - Mike LeFevers. I mentioned I had a line a year ago on the same stuff available here - Brand new SO block, NASCAR rods & crank, etc. He said run it if you get the crank & rods for under $700 - other than that he wouldn't run the risk. Now my engine runs JE Pistons & Forged H-Beam Eagle rods. Hope it helps.

I think this is more about an exercise in "originality" than "functionality". Some guys (and I applaud them) are VERY into getting their car period correct. A "virgin" 427 S.0. would certainly qaulify for that!

A NASCAR rotating assy. is not a big deal, it's heavy and unless a new supplier has come about, they only made standard bearings. You would be better off having the leMans assy. Either way you will not likely get 25K But, never say never, there are a lot of folks out there with more money than common sense.

it is a very difficult call, some guys have told me the motor could be worth as much as $50,000, to the right buyer, I think that is a bit much. the strongest selling point is that it is a virgin motor, with all original parts. it is for bragging rights, for someone building a show car as close as possible to the original. will try to get some more internal part #s hope to be able to post them later. kinda busy at my shop at the moment. will return about 9pm tonight.

A 'virgin' high phosphorus S/O block sold on ebay a short time back for about 6K+-, this being the most expensive part should give you an idea of what you might get?.

6K for a gutted block is about right, this assumes of course it is a GOOD block. About the cheapest I've seen for a "bare" block is around 4K.

But what were talking about here is a Long Block (internals, cam and heads, minus manifold) big difference!
