Original 68 428 CJ (GT500KR)
 

I have an original 428 CJ Long Block that came out of a 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR. The intake I have is not original (Dual Carb Eddlebrock) and I don't have the Exhaust Manifolds. It's completely disassembled and in great condition (just needs hot tank & hone). Can supply the pics to prove authenticity as requested. Make offer.

How much HP were these motors originally built to produce? How many miles on the motor before disassembly? What new parts come with it like cam/main bearings? Were these blueprinted motors? I assume, since you are asking for best offer, that this motor has some significant historical value over and above what a non-Shelby motor might have. If so, what has been done to it to justify that? I'm somewhat of a newbie on Ford FE motors so, please, bear with me.

No new parts are being sold with this engine. The only thing that has been done to it is the crank machining (-.010). The cam, intake, and distributor are not original.
Basically, I think a 428 CJ is the same no matter what type car it originated. I'm told one of the main differences is that the heads are superior to your every day 428 truck engine. However, this engine belongs in what it originated which was a 68 Shelby GT500KR. This is tribal knowlede among my family. The guy who installed a new stock replacement 428 in his Shelby probably didn't keep the dual carburetor set up because his new engine didn't have the flow capacity or compression to handle it.
A discussion on how much HP a stock 428 CJ produces could soon dominate my thread so I don't want to go there. Let's just say there's plenty of HP and Torque to get the job done.
Don't know how many miles were on the engine before disassembly. Probably a million or so - however, everything has been inspected and is in good condition. Once you put it all together it will be just like new as long as you know what you're doing and install new bearings, rings, hone the cylinders (don't need machined for sure), and all the other normal stuff you do prior to assembly.
As far as the "blue printing", I don't know what they did at the Ford Factory. There's no bushing in the stock timing gear so I doubt it was ever "blue printed." It's internally balanced (no external counter weight). Someone later installed an Eddlebrock aluminum intake and Mallory distributor but that's it. Not even a new cam or timing gears/chain.
It's easy to prove this is a 68 CJ but I don't think it's that easy to prove it's a Shelby CJ. I think the Casting Codes merely indicate it could be from a Shelby GT500KR. There's no VIN on the block or at least I can't see it. I believe Ford didn't start stamping VIN's until sometime during 1968 so this one must have went through the assembly line before they started. There's a “20F” stamped on a flat spot under the head on the block but have no idea what it means. One guy told me it's an assembly date from when the car went through the line (20 June).

Check the back side if the cylinder block on the drivers side. There's a raised boss that usually has the vin # stamp, they are sometimes hard to see because of the casting texture. Ford rated the engines at 335 hp (which was 10 less than the standard 428 and 25 less than the PI), estimates based on their performance were somewhere in the area of 400+. The lower rating was done to soothe the insurance demons of the day.

There is no way to veirfy that this engine was in a Shelby other than to match the VIN. The 428 CJ was built in one version only in 68 and appeared in the GT500 KR and the Mustang. It was until recently the fasted pure stock Mustang ever....blows the doors off a Boss 429!


BTW, there were no "428 truck motors"...428s went only in big Fords and Mercury, T-Birds (starting in 1966) and Mustang/Cougar and Fairlane/Montego models. The CJ went only in the pony cars in 1968, mid year to be exact.
