Probably not a lot, so if it's in the way I'll be glad to take it off your hands. Look, I'd even pay shipping just to help you out.

Default Hon-O-DRIVE

Hi Hopskid,

I'm interested in this part for my Cobra. Can you please tell me a little more about this and do you happen to have any pics? Just so you know, I'm a serious buyer and am willing to pay a fair price if this will do the jpb I want it to, which a friend od mine says it will. Please email me at: jmcdan@comcast.net or you can call me on my cell phone: (904) 635-2885. Looking forward to talking to you.

A Hone-O-Drive is a self-contained "overdrive" unit from the sixties. I don't recall the gear reduction, probably around 30%. I remember I always wanted one - but, back in the day, they were expensive - like around $600 or so. They are pretty large, maybe 2/3's the size of a Ford C4 tranny. I don't think there would be room in a Cobra - my driveshaft is only about 12" long, I think the Hone-O-Drive is about 10 or 11" long.

I would think that with 4-speed automatics and 5 and 6-speed manuals that there wouldn't be much use for a Hone-O-Drive in a Cobra. A very cool piece, but, no longer the only way to get extra gear reduction.

Jeff;

Thanks for the info,I thought it probably was some kind of overdrive unit,just did not know they were called that....I would think it would be near impossible to put one in a Cobra because lack of room between the trans. and rear end.....

Street rodders are big into nostalgia, they are probubly your best possible buyers.

....even street rodders have moved on. Back in the day over drive was hard to come by in any form, that was then this is now. A tremec 5 speed is the answer.

I recall a time when Ramblers, Fords, and others had that most sought after "option" of "over drive"! If you didn't have OD, Hone-O-drive and a few others like it was the ticket!

Leycock De Haviland. The English answer to the OD problem. That unit found it's way into LOTS of MG's, Healeys and the like. It would NOT stand up to high horse power however!

I'm not positive, but I believe GearVendors is making the unit again. They were pretty strong and could hold up in a Big Block muscle car.

It was an option on '66 Shelby's. I had a Pinto with a 302 in it when I was in high school. I put a hone-o-drive in it. With 3.50 gears, I don't remember it being too much of an OD. The speedo cable went back to the unit. It was a pretty interesting setup. It eventually got stuck in low gear, and thats the way it stayed until I sold it.

Must be the reason why they spend so much on flathead motors, 331 hemis, stromberg carbs, quick change rear ends, and all those other modern drivetrain parts.
