Default 1968 Ford 427 FE Engines

I have two 1968 Ford 427 marine engines that are in great shape. They are cross bolt mains, Carter AFB carbs. Does anyone know what they are worth? It's a shame to let these fine engines go to waste in a boat when they could be in a Cobra.

Depends,

Condition is everything. Salt water boats that have been in or out of the water for 35 years are pretty much good for scrap. However, If the boat was a fresh water boat which was maintained and hauled out for the season they might be fine. How many hours on them? Have they been rebuilt and or bored more than .030? If so there are 2 side oiler blocks on e-bay that are selling for $300-500 each. Yours are likely worth the same or less. (they are sleeved need new sleeves)

Which crank does the engine have? (the counter rotation engines crank is scrap) Additionally, one of the blocks will need provisions for a reverse rotation rear seal. This really must be disclosed to a potential buyer. Which heads? 1960's boat engines seldom had 427 heads on them. Some I have seen 406 heads (which are actually very good) to 390 passenger car heads (which are great for grandmothers galaxy).

That said, I have seen standard bore, standard rotation, steel crank, lemans rod engines sell for $3500. $2500 for the reverse rotation. I would suggest tearing them down and having then mic'd and sonic checked. That won't cost much and will be a nice selling feature if they check out.

Thanks Michael,

Thanks for the reply. The engines are in a boat that I have owned for a long time. I also knew the previous owners. It has always been in fresh water, so there is no rust. They look like new. There are 830 hours of low speed operation on them. The boat is so big that the previous owner was afraid to drive it. The engines are operated at about 1,800 rpm most of the time. The boat will burn 45 gallons per hour if you give it any throttle. They were built in 1968. The boat is getting old, and I want to sell it. I need to know more about the reverse rotation differences.

I agree on these prices if they are so equipt ,since they were in a boat they are probably service/marine blocks which are said to be more porous than the auto blocks but should be fine. When do you think they will be available?

SCORBAC, counter rotation cranks are not scrap, a good machine shop can reverse the knurling on the crank and, the blocks
are the same, it's all in the rotating assembly........
