I have an older Street Rodder mag that has everything you would want for the info you are looking for. Trouble is Im not sure where I have the dang thing in the house. I will try to find it ASAP. Have you tried Mike at Concouarse West? If hes still around, he was last in CA. Good luck!

Mike,

You'll find that the "Salisbury" Jag diff. has a lot in common with a Spicer-Dana 44. In point of fact it was made by Spicer as far as I know.

As to numbers, the tags on your diff. cover give part of the story as to ratio, which is done as tooth count on ring and tooth count on pinion. The elevation of the plug will tell you if it has a limited slip unit AKA "powr-lok" without pulling the cover. The extra tag should also say this while it specifies oil type.

I had mine rebuilt because a flippin' amatur did it to start with. How do you know it needs rebuilt? Have you had it apart?

If not, don't just assume that it does. Pull the cover and look at the pattern on the ring gear. If the teeth are not chipped or show unusual wear and the pattern is even across the face of the tooth without any indentation, it is quite likely a-ok. Those units are pretty tough.

Now, If you feel play in the outboard axle bearings, those can be changed without full disassembly. If there is play in the pinion bearing and noticeable gear lash, it probably wouldn't hurt to get it done.

If you have not done this work before, I would strongly recommend finding an expert. The Salisbury-Dana's require the use of dial indicators and shims to properly set them up.

When I got mine done, I converted the ring and pinion to Dana 44 pieces which requires inserts in the carrier for the smaller ring gear bolts. Bearings were straight Dana after the conversion. (A lot cheaper than trying to get the Salisbury parts.)

Also by converting to Dana, there are many more ratios to choose from.

Find a really good rear end guy (no pun intended and you'll probably find a full rebuild/conversion will run about $700 give or take.

Hope this helps a little.

Al

The reason I`ve decided to rebuild this rearend is because it has an "Open" differential and I will find a Power lock for it. Also the gears are about 2:88- Not quite what I am looking for. I have another complete XJS12 rear diff with 3:31 and the Power lock, but I`ve heard that some Diff Housings are stronger than others,ie. The early XKE housing is supposeed to be better than the XJS variety. If this is the case then I will Rebuild the better of the two - and use it. I have setup many 12 Bolt Cheb rear axles so rebilding these units won`t be a problem. Like many of you - This Hobby ( Cobra`s) makes you go way overboard in everything you do to the car. Also please pass the word around that I am seeking a Bare Contemporary Body. Thanks for your replys...Mike in Comox B.C Canada

Mike,
I have several "old" articles on jag rear ends, plus a parts break down from a Jag manual. I would be happy to send you a copy of what I have if you think you could use them. There are many more combinations of parts than I ever knew or expected. Much to my dismay I found that the '70 unit from a V12 was too wide for my body and I had to switch shafts and lower arm from a 6 cyl car. Luckily I was still able to retain the V12 brakes and bearing carrier, and now everything fits fine. The sedan parts are even wider. Email your address if you want the info or if I can be of any help as I have rebuilt 2 Jag IRS and have found some shortcuts dollar wise. My Email is JRSVOtt@aol.com .
