Default 289 Cobra Bell Housing

Hello, I have a cast iron 289 Cobra Bell Housing. The date code is C5. It is a six bolt with the Cobra lettering across the top in between the ribs. I am thinking of selling it. What kind of money can I expect? Thanks, Brian

I have added pictures of the Bell Housing to the "My Gallery" section. Thanks, Brian

Original or reproduction? Six bolt versions were reproduced nearly twenty years ago. They are cast steel in any case as cast iron would not make much of a safety shield. Both originals and reproductions show up on ebayŽ auctions. I have seen originals go from about $250 used and up to $700 NOS still in the Dearborn Steel Tube box with the very large COBRA sticker denoting a "COBRA KIT" item.

I was thinking the same thing...if to be used in a cobra, could be too dangerous (being made out of cast iron).

I gussed it was cast iron because of it's weight. Could be steel. I will add some pictures tommorrow to the site. Thanks, for the information. There is a Ford base number on the part. Would this number be on a reproduction? Brian

The reproductions that I have looked at are very good reproductions in every detail, lettering and numbering included.

Strength? A friend used one (an original) in the early 1980s on a track only race car. The clutch, flywheel ring gear, throw out bearing, and transmission input shaft came apart somewhere around where the tach tell-tale stopped near 9,000 rpm (downshift to wrong gear) one night. Nothing escaped the scattershield. Job done!

Thanks,

Mike

I would love to have that scattershield, which is possibly the more "correct" term for this thing, since the standard bellhousings were cast aluminum. I suggest you advertise it on E-Bay to get the market price. Advertise it as a "289 Cobra Scattershield bellhousing". perhaps. Mention "GT 350" and "hipo 289" in the ad since the scattershield is a very desirable piece to have on those cars. They are cast iron. Just try picking one up! I have owned one that has been "used" when a clutch exploded, and it did the job, although the force seriously distorted the scattershield. It did not crack. I have sold some in the past for $500 to $1000. Yours could be at the upper end of that, I think, although the ones I sold were 5-bolt, which are much rarer, so maybe less.

Jim, thanks for the information. I am going to post the "Scattershield Bell Housing" on eBay in the near future. I appreciate your advice. Thanks, Brian

I would like to find a 5 bolt. Have been looking with no luck yet. I do have the aluminum version with backing plate but the Cobra would be a much safer bet...

Griffith,

Just an FYI. If you want a grand for it on ebay, don't start the bidding at a grand. See, people don't get immediately excited when they see the high price. They think it is too expensive and won't buy it. Someone might, but I doubt it. Start the auction at one dollar, no reserve. People will see it and get excited because it will be really cheap at first. They start envisioning it on their car and probably even start telling their friends they are getting one. By the time the auction is ending the people are seriously emotionally attached and have to have it.

Just my .02 cents. I've bought and sold hundreds of things on ebay.

BTW- I bought my 5 bolt for $72 because it was listed as a Dodge since it had Wedge cast into it. Wedge made em for Ford. In this case it backfired on the seller because he listed it wrong. List it right, list it low.

Griffith,
Last one on Ebay did not sell. There is just not enough excitement about them and enough bidders to make it a good auction. Just make a deal with Cobra Pack and save yourself the Ebay expenses. $1000.00 is a fair price and everybody is happy.

How many pairs of shoes does she have? How many of the brands can you pronounce?
