428...what's it worth?
I've located a Thunderbird with a running (stock) 428. The guy is asking $1000 for the car (very nice shape)
Is $1000 for the engine out of line?

with a big block car, the rear may be a 9 inch posi. i think it's a good buy if the motor is rebuildable

Not sure if the T-birds had extra ribs and thicker main suppors, I would hold out and find one if not. All 428 cranks are the same.

Well, first, you would get more info if this was located in the FE Forum...perhaps Jamo can move it.
Second...the answer is, it depends. There are lots of variations. You need to get the ID numbers off the block first. If it is a service block, that may not help...
Try and get the numbers and post them here.

Sounds about right to me. I paid $1000 for a standard bore running 428 out of a 66 Galaxy. As long as there's nothing major wrong with the block and crank the engine alone is worth $1000.

$1000 sounds right., scrap everything else and the motor is paid for.
Now, get ye hence to the FE forum!

I'd say yes it's worth it. The std 428 engine is fine and will run like a bear! I'd say you could recoupe your investment selling off the rest of the car if you won't be wanting to keep it. Nice score!. G.

I sold a rebuildable (running) 428 for $1300 complete with a weiand intake. It was .020 over and needed another .010 to clean up.
Most 428's will go .030 with no problem. So verify the bore if you can. You might find a casting number and run it. I have 2 428's in my garage now that are worth $750 and $1000 for just for the block. One is a CX (CJ) block and one is a 1966 428 (correct for a 1967 GT 500... )
That said, I'd say a good 428 is worth easily $1000. More here in California.
