Question Wanted: Portable Air/Fuel Ratio meter

Is there a portable (and let's add affordable...say under $400) air/fuel ratio meter that does NOT require tapping a hole and installing a bung for the sensor? I'm thinking of those pipe sniffers that the smog guys attach to your tailpipe with a spring clip, but in a compact, hand-held readout?

Everything I see on the market requires a hole and welding. There are exhaust temperature gauges, but that only gives you a rough estimate if a cylinder is running rich (low temp) or lean (high temp).

Yeah, I know a quick trip to a chassis dyno would be cheaper, but I'm a serious DIYer and love to tinker. I really think there is a market for this type of device. Thanks for any links or insight!

Regards,

I think that there may be a direct and consistently repeatable relationship to temp of the header near the exhast port and the A/F ratio. If you can find a chart that shows the relationships of this temp to A/F, then just buy one of those infared temp measuring guns, and start having fun!

Regards

Inovate LM1 little under 400--you can get a tailpipe adapter but I would suggest welding a bung

Ours fell out of the side pipe on a test drive one day and skinned it up some

I use the LM-1 and bought the aux box and tailpipe clamp. I monitor, A/F EGT and RPM. Play back on the computer and you can really pick and choose segments and see exactly what's going on.....A little more than 400.00 though.....but well worth it.
