I'd start with thoroughly testing the switch. Make sure the beast is in neutral. Turn the key to ON, and then jiggle the hell out of the key and the wiring behind the switch. If you get even a flicker of starter action, the keyswitch is bad.
You're likely to have some damage to the starter pinion teeth and possibly the flywheel. Once you sort out the electrical problem, you might want to inspect both carefully.
