NEWS: SEMA releases 50-state guide to registering hobby cars

I don't think this has been posted yet...

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Action Network has just released an online guide to registering/titling hobby cars in all 50 U.S. states.

Sounds like an invaluable information resource that should save Cobra kit builders a ton of headaches, figuring out how to go about it.

Thanks, Sundude;
I just read the Virginia section. I don't know if it will save me a ton of headaches, but at least they'll be organized headaches!!

True enough. True enough.

Maybe the moderator would like to make this a sticky post, as the SEMA guide would be a good place to start for any registration-related questions.

Nothing for DC....

Note:
Many states allow for a replica Cobra to be registered/titled as the year and model they most closely represent. Many such states also include on the title a certain designation indicating the true nature of the vehicle (replica, street rod, component, specially constructed, etc.).

From the Oregon statues:
(c) If the vehicle is a replica, the records shall indicate that the vehicle is a replica.

Oregon law also states it is the responsibility of the registered owner to bring to the attention of the DMV an incorrect declaration/description of a replica vehicle.

In other words, if your 1965 Cobra Oregon title doesn't say "replica" on it, somewhere, it is incorrect and illegal. If your Hawaii title doesn't say "street rod" on it somewhere, it is incorrect and illegal. If your (add a State name here....) title doesn't specify the true nature of your "1965 Cobra" it is likely illegal and incorrect.

What you do about it, if anything, is your business. Just don't get upset when someone calls BS on your "1965 Cobra" title. Someone like California, or a future buyer, or even myself.

If you live in Oregon (or Hawaii), I would stop telling people about (or posting on a forum about) your "1965 Cobra" title with no disclaimers thereon. Just sayin'... :)

Mr. Morgester might be keepin' a record. :) :)
