When I took in my Superformance to get a NY vin number. I showed them the number on the frame that matched the Minnesota vin number. Which NY said could not be used in NY. So all they did was give me a NY (yellow) vin sticker to put on the car and had to pay with a money order which I had to get from the post office down the road. They sent the paper work in and about three weeks later I received paper work and a new title in the mail the matched the new NY vin number.

Status on registering my Cobra.
I received a response from the VIN Assignment Department Monday, they have scheduled me for an inspection for December 13th at 9:30 AM.
Today I spoke to the Technical Service Bureau Manager and received good news, they will except my providing a statement the car is equipped with a PVC system. This will satisfy the emissions issue since the application year of the 351W engine is 1966. I have to have fabric sleeves covering the visors and send a photo showing the padded dash. These items will satisfy the TSB and they will approve issuing a VIN sticker.
This is very encouraging.

Status on registering my Cobra.
This Friday afternoon I haul the Cobra to a nearby waste transfer station with scales in an enclosed trailer I have borrowed to receive a weight ticket I will present to the VIN assessment people inspecting the car on the following Tuesday. The process continues.

Status on the New York Registration:
Brought home the enclosed trailer last night only to discover the door cables were too close and I couldn't get the cobra inside. Rented a U haul car hauler trailer this afternoon and got the car weighed it came in at 2600#. We have had snow falling overnight and fortunately had a break long enough this afternoon to haul the uncovered cobra down the road. The roads had dried and "spitting" from the truck wheels was minimal.
Tuesday I repeat the same but this time it's to the DMV for the road inspection.

Got another question about visors. I had fabric sleeves made for the two upper windshield visors and simply removed the two uncovered side visors. Will they require the side visors to pass inspection? Should I leave them off or reinstall them uncovered for this Tuesday's DMV inspection?

You do not need the wind wings (side visors as you referred to them) for inspection. So, you can remove them if you like. They do not require that they be cushioned as they are considered to be external and padding them would diminish your line of sight.

Brought the Cobra to the DMV today, it went extremely well I was in and out in 20 minutes. They handed me the signed MV-272.1 Application for Vehicle Identification Number and placed the yellow VIN sticker on the firewall under the hood.
Just sent the required documents including the MV-272.1 to Albany requesting the VS-103Notice of Registration Acceptability. With it I can register my car. Almost there!!

You're getting it done way too quick , your going to have everything ready and then be sitting in your living room looking out at the snow and fretting over when you can finally get the car on the road
Good luck with everything. Have you settled on an insurer yet?

Can't believe how this process is moving for me, I sent signed MV 272.1 to Albany last night along with a statement they required about the engine application year and PCV emissions for that year. Also sent a photo of the padded dash and visors.
Called them today and they approved the VS-103 Registration Acceptability and emailed it to me. The next stop is a DMV inspection station and on to the DMV to pick up plates.
I arranged for insurance the day the Cobra arrived I went with Leland West out of California. Great price and service.

I was able to get there, not much activity there since the middle of last year. I believe that there are some people out your way in Long Island and some in the Albany area. There are several out towards the middle of the state and a few in the Rochester and Buffaloo areas.

1795 I'll try again to open the site. I live in the Syracuse area not Long Island, I see you're in the Finger Lakes area. I've heard there are other Cobra owners in the Syracuse area. Considering getting the car inspected now and get the plates but the weather isn't cooperating.

We tried to put together a cruise/barbeque event for the New York and Northern PA. people but time ran out this year and some health issues intervened.
The concept is meeting somewhere early Saturday in Central New York and cruising to Lake Ontario for lunch. Then on to Lockport for a canal cruise and ending up in Niagara Falls at the Seneca Hotel/Casino for a catered barbeque. We will have secured indoor parking in the parking ramp. Of course people will be free to do alternate options ,but the idea is to all end up together for an evening. Sunday AM breakfast, bullshipping/bench racing and then depart for home.
There would be no cost for the event other than the meals and room if you choose to stay over. There will be a special room rate at the hotel.
The idea is to get out, stretch our cars a little and get to know each other.
This will be sponsored by Time Machines and will be open to ANY brand of Cobra, GT40, Seven type car as well as other specialty, exotic, component cars. No "your car is a fake", no "that's the wrong shade of blue" etc. Just fun and games.
We are looking at late July or early August for this event. Please let me know if you would be interested. No commitment at this point, just need to get a rough idea of the numbers to negotiate the room rates an the other features.
There will be access to the Niagara Outlet Mall as well as numerous other attractions for spouses. There is even this big cliff that water flows over....go figure?

Airboat1,
My is mistake. Would be nice to get together and see each other vehicles. Summer is a great time for cruising. Hope to see you out there. Rick (Mark IV) also puts together a chance for people to get their cobras out on the track for parade laps at Watkins Glen during the Vintage Grand Prix. It is a fun time and you get to se some nice cars.

Sounds great, that area is a beautiful drive. I don't think my car has had much highway time the underside is spotless and all Florida roads. I bought it with 1990 miles on it not much for a 2005 build. It sat for some time between owners. I recall seeing a Cobra on the Mass Pike some years ago on our way to Boston. Had a picture of it on the phone. I guess some people drive them just like a regular car. That's what I bought it for I've no interest in racing it. What about you?

Steve,
I put a ton of miles on mine, over 4,000 mies a year. They are a fun car to drive and you will get all sorts of looks. My focus has turned more towards racing over the past couple of years. Make sure that you are on dry roads the first time out so that you get a feel for how the car handles.
If the car is a 2005 build and only has 1990 miles on it, those might be the original tires. You will need to get a new set if that is so, as those tires will not be safe and may blow at any time irrespective of the amount of tread on them.

Good advise, I'll check the files to see if the tires on it are replacements.

You can decode the manufacture dates from the sidewall on line. 5 years is the edge and 7 is definitely Russian Roulette.
Paul Walker Crash | Aging Tires - Consumer Reports News
Chancing you neck in a high performance car for the cost of tires is a poor tradeoff.
