Has anyone gone through the SB 100 forms and processes through the California DMV recently?

I bought my cobra out of New York. It was originally purchased in California and still has the Ca tag on the right inner apron. I was talking with someone today about registering my car,which is registered in New York as a 1984

The engine is a 1969 351w

He was telling me I might have to have all the smog setup for a 1984 cats etc.

I hope he is wrong

Registration and SB100 are really two separate things. Your first issue is if California will recognize the title from New York.

From the DMV:

" Anyone who brings a vehicle into California, or purchases a nonresident vehicle while in California, should be aware that some nonresident vehicles cannot be registered in California or the United States (U.S.). For rules and exceptions, see the Buying a Vehicle From Out of State-Can You Register It in California? (FFVR 29) Fast Facts brochure on the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website at Detail

Caution: Unless the vehicle was originally manufactured to meet California emission standards or the owner or vehicle qualifies for an exemption, California law prohibits:

California residents or businesses from bringing into California or registering in California, a motor vehicle that had less than 7,500 miles on the odometer (at the time of purchase, trade, or acquisition).
Anyone from importing a new direct import vehicle less than two years old."



Once you get past the issues regarding out-of-state registration, the SB100 will be no issue at all. You will be able to get the SB100 for the 1969 351 without doing anything to the engine except perhaps a PCV valve, which is no big deal.

Paul this has me concerned now after rereading the odometer mileage of 7500
I bought this with supposedly only 5100 miles which according to my mechanic is incorrect :-(

Someone just posted a helpful post regarding getting through the registration process in California over on Cobra Registry. It doesn't deal with the non-resident issue, but has a good bit of helpful information in there and is certainly worth a read.

I built my car from a kit and went through the SB100 process last year. A few hairballs but it generally went well. As Paul mentioned, your issue is different. You need to figure out how to transfer registration to CA. I can help you with the SB100 process if you figure that out.

You have a problem. People have run into these issues in the past. In past instances, people were unsuccessful in registering Cobras and have had to resell them out of state.

For those lurking and considering buying a Cobra in California, ALWAYS call Sacramento DMV (not your local office, they don't know necessarily know what they are talking about) with all the details about a car you are considering before you buy. They will tell you if you can get it registered or not.

I can finally sleep now I called DMV and they could actually pull up my Ca vin#
Which AAA couldnt do .The gal at DMV told me that it was transferred to FL which concurs with what the seller in NY told me
Even found a B.A.R. plate next to my Vin#

With a CA VIN and a BAR sticker, you're in good shape. I would think that you can go straight in for an SB100 at the DMV.

No, you don't need to bring your car. The normal steps are:

Visit DMV - Pay fees for registration. Get temp new registration and SB100 number. The SB100 will be handwritten and is of no use yet. It's just for your reference. Be patient, your agent may not know what an SB100 is or what to do. Don't worry about it. Any DMV office will figure it out and get you the number. They may have to open some 3 ring binders up (as they did trying to figure it out at my office), but they will figure it out.

Wait for two or more weeks for SB100 number in official form to show up in the mail.

While waiting, put that PVC on.

When the paperwork arrives, make a BAR appointment.

Go to the BAR with the paperwork you received in the mail (SB100), title, and temp registration.

BAR will put a new SB100 sticker on your car. Put a big smile on your face. You did it.

Return to the DMV. They will take your title and will mail you a new title.

Put the registration sticker on the license plate.

Go drive the car.

Everything went well so far today at the Rancho Cucamonga DMV got a temp license for 30 days now its on to CHP and B.AR. I"m glad I made a reservation there were a ton of people there

Since it is a formerly CA registered vehicle, I'm surprised you have to go to the CHP. What are they going to do?

The clerk at the dmv ask me if I brought my car in.I didnt but had all my paper work handy.I mentioned that I think I have to go to a CHP staion to get it verified,He said oh yeah.

vin verification and safety inspection I guess.I probably shouldnt have said anything

DMV can do a "vin verification", so the DMV clerk with not wrong asking if you brought your car in...

It's probably no big deal. It's just an extra trip. But you don't want to give the 'gubmint any opportunity to foul things up. Now THINK before you go to the CHP.

- Bring drivers license
- Don't eat 3 alarm chilli before you go and then break out into a sweat at the CHP. It's a sure sign you are up to something.

Then again, is there anything from the DMV that says you have to go to the CHP? Some form that must be signed by the CHP? I.e is there something in your file that says you can't go to the BAR and skip the CHP step? Just a thought.
