I was excited to read an old thread on this topic written by Ron Going stating you can register as a 1966 RCobra instead of a kit. Well, I decided to take a trip to the Dept. of Lic. to check this out before I pull the trigger on buying a Cobra. It seems that they no longer do it that way. The person helping me searched everything out and printed me copies of all the new rules. They now consider ALL replicas as kit cars.
Quoted fron the D.O.L. rules - "Titles previously issued for Replica Vehicles have an "R" as the first letter of the make followed by what the vehicle looked like (RFORD for example); the year was the year it replicated; the series and body described the vehicle and may or may not include REPLICA, REP, tec. Since most (if not all) replica vehicles are made from kits, we no longer classify them as replicas. Any vehicle titled and licensed as a replica will remain as one.

They now title the car as the year the MCO/MSO states. Which means you will be subject to emission checks after 5 years if your area requires it. She said she knew of no way around it other than spending $150 at a certified emissions place every 2 years for a waiver.

I really want to build a Cobra but not if I have to go through all that B.S. in 5 years. Suggestions????????????

Their is provision for a permanent waiver after a year five inspection. The process really isn't bad. Surely not enough to prevent one from building!

Does the state of Washington view Superformance built cars as kit cars too? Not a kit as far as I can see. Fully manufactured and assembled at the factory, right?

From what I've found out, it would be titled as KITV and the year would be the year of manufacture. If you live in the Puget Sound I-5 corridor, you would then be subject to emission checks. The vast majority of the state doesn't require testing - for now anyhow.
