CA: Can I get an SB100 number without a car?
I'm going to get the car sometime in 2007. What do I need to get an SB100 sequence number? Can I get the number on the first day of 2007 so I already have it when I get the car?
Thanks,
Steve

Short answer, you must have the car.
From the DMV web site ( http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/spcnsreg.htm ) regarding Registration Requirements for Home-Made, Specially Constructed, or Kit Vehicles:
"Proof of ownership, such as invoices, receipts, manufacturers’ certificates of origin, bills of sale, or junk receipts for the major component parts (engine, frame, transmission, and body)."

MSO & receipts
If you have the MSO from the manufacturer & receipts for all major components; engine, trans, & labor. Then you can get an SB100 number in Jan.

P.S. See you in line at DMV!

What Jdog posted is correct, but I would ask that you consider for a minute that you getting an SB100# that you won't use for...lets call it six months? may take an SB100# away from someone whose car is running and sitting in their garage.
I'm not saying that I wouldnt understand why you would choose to get one anyway, just something for you to ponder.....

They only give out 500 and they will be gone by the middle of the second day so if you think you will have you car on the road at anytime in that year it is a great idea to get your number asap!

As stated, you can't even get to first base without the MSO and receipts for major components. As for even securing one of the 500 numbers in 2007, good luck.
Some history...
2002 - There was a surplus of SB100 certificates (not all were used)
2003 - All were gone on June 12
2004 - Feb 28, nada
2005 - The second business day in January
2006 - by noon on the first day of business of the new year
Sad, but true. I would like to build another car, but won't until something is done with the idiotic CA registration process.
