New Arizona Cobra title question.
I just purchased a Kirkham 427SC completed car in Texas and need to title it in AZ. The car has never been titled and the owner has the MSO. Will it be easier for me to have him get a 1965 Texas title and take that to the AZ motor vehicle folks or would it be easier to get an AZ title with the MSO transfered to me? After talking to the DMV it sounds like having a 1965 title from Texas would make it easier but I would like some info from an AZ owner who has done it. Thanks in advance.

I brought mine here from TX in 2004, where it had been titled and registered previously. The process was very easy. The DMV does the lower level (can't recall if that is level1 or level2) inspection, which consisted mostly of checking that the VIN matched the paperwork (actually, the gal and I couldn't evn find the VIN, so she just said OK and passed me - I guess I look honest). Then I went inside and they made up a new title that called it a 1966 Cobra (The TX paperwork had it listed as built in 1992). Here in AZ, they title them as the car they represent. From there, it was quick to get it licensed, but they couldn't find a sale price from '66, so I told them ~$5000 - that got me tags for $16/yr for two years. No emissions since it is a '66.
If you bring it here first, the process is still pretty easy, given the right MSO etc..., but still easier if the seller will title it in TX first. Makes it a slam dunk.

I think it would be easier if you get it without title from another state. They will title it here as a 65. It will be a piece of cake to get it reg. I think all you will need is a Level 1 inspection. Seems they have change it since I got mine.

what if it is a scratch built? I am making the body and chassis so I won't have a number from a manufacturer. or a bill of sale for that matter. except for the engine.

I have a house in Lake Havasu AZ, and the stuff I have registered out there has been very easy. No smog requirments and very little else. Hell you see buggies, Rhino's etc... driving around town. Here in Ca it is a very different story. I don't think you will have a problem with or without a title from Texas.

wish i was in texas. CA sucks ,I paid $1044. for tax and reg,now they want $624. more and i have not even seen my plates yet.

Yep, my car was already SB100 when I transfered title and ordered new plates and that was hard enough. It took a supervisor to get it done...  |

I bought my Coupe kit from someone in another state, the MSO was signed (notarized?) and I had a bill of sale. I built the car in about a year, paid the tax on the sale price and passed a level 1 inspection and the car is registered as a 1965 Special Construction. No smog and plates are about $30 /year.
I spent more time worrying about getting the car titled than it took to get it titled.

From things I am reading the last post seems to hit the nail. Don't worry about it unless it happens. 
Does any one here want to get it licensed as a 65 or 6 to only get the cheaper plates or mainly to avoid emissions? |

Chip, whatever happened on your registration? I may buy an entirely rebuilt "66" roadster from a company out of state. It will also only have an MSO. How will the sales tax work and also registration? Did MVD ultimately title yours as a 1966 reflecting a low license fee? |
