On 256, I know what you mean. I only signed and dated the form on Section H. The clerk made me right something on Section G to state that "I" built the car. You would write, "this specially construction vehicle was built primarily for my private use and not intended for resale or export." They'll be happy with that statement for sure.
On from 343, I only filled out Sections 1, 2, and 4. DO NOT WRITE A VIN on any of the forms. DMV will likely use your car's frame number as stated on the MCO (Manufacturer Certificate of Origin) as the temp VIN until you get the official VIN from CHP. You might get lucky and CHP will use your frame number as your VIN.
On form 5036, I filled out Sections 2,3,5,6,8
On section 5, be careful and do not try to cheat too much. DMV is very aware of how much these cars cost to build so be warned. I declared and supported with receipts (although clerk didn't want to look at receipts) a constrution cost of almost $30k. I didn't want to be foolish on this as I don't want to take a chance getting red-flagged from declaring a suspiciously low amount for something we all know cost at least $20k to build....CA wants its fair cut..best to give it up.
E-mail me if you have other questions, I would be glad to help. I drive by you on the 405 at least once a month. I'd like to check out your new ride. What color?
Good luck. Let me know what happens at the DMV....but I am sure you will walk out of there with a big red TOP and a bigger smile.
BTW...when they get ready to give you a TOP, tell them that CHP is very busy but they might be able to sqeeze you in for your VIN assignment in Mid-December....this way, DMV will give you a TOP with a big number "12" on it..good til end of year.
