Default Car last registered in New York

I have a car that was last registered in New York through 1998. I haven't had it on the road since then so I didn't keep the registration current. What can I expect now that I am bringing the vehicle to California. I've lived here since 1990 but I always had car in New York. Will they accept my New York paperwork? Do I get dinged for not paying fees during non registered years? In New York it's registered as a 1965 Cobra. What's ahead for me?

Well, I would think that not having it registered all these years will certainly raise the red flags even higher than they alrealy would with simply having a SPCN registered as a 1965.
Also, how do u plan to explain having lived here all these years but having your Cobra in NY?
Just be wary that DMV is really cracking down on suspicious registrations so there is a good chance that if they even think that there is something fishy about your case, they will flat out tell you you can't register your car in California.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

I still have all the paperwork from New York and the vehicle check showed vehicle still registered to me in New York. Process went very smooth I didn't have the problems I thought I would. Good thing I had record of tax paid to New York I was surprised they wanted that which was paid years ago.

Red how did CA DMV title the car for you? As a '65 or as a recent year SPCNS? If it's as a '65 you may run into trouble down the road. Best of luck.

Titled same as New York but they told me I may get flagged and if I do to come back and they will help me with process. New York still had original MSO in records. I didn't build the car I bought it as turn key in 1993. Has a 1965 427 block in it.

Red get it registered as SPCN if you can and get in line in January for an SB100 number.
