SB100 Renewal?
I received my SB100 sequence number in 2006, and I am not going to complete my car in 2006. I did nothing with the registration - no CHP and obviously no BAR inspection because although the car is 98%, it is not running. My question is does the SB100 number expire if I do not get it completed in 2006? I have no temporary tag or anything. Just my offical DMV paper work from January 2nd.
Can someone elaborate with certainy? You can imagine the dissapointment of having the number and then getting the car running and then finding out the number expired.
Thanks.

No, it does not expire. Your temporary operating permit will have expired (TOP) . Your SPCNS number is permenantly in the DMV database so just hang on to it.

289fia,
So now what? Great news, but now I just go through the procedure as originally? CHP, light inspection then BAR? Thats it, no fiasco? C' mon, this is California, there must be some way the DMV is going to make my life a living hell. Thanks for the good news. Phew do I feel better, and will feel even more better after your next post...

My recommendation would be to contact your DMV office (in person) and ask your questions. I believe 289fia_cobra is accurate, however, I have seen some replies pertaining to SB100 that are absolutely ridiculous.
Have you heard the term "jail house lawyer". Pay a visit to DMV and get the questions to your answers straight from the horse's mouth.
Good luck.

I got the car in Dec. '04, got my SB100 no. in '05 and finished it in '06. Absolutely no problems.
One tip on the smog part. You need to PASS a smog test, not just take one. That means that you need to be able to hold the engine at 2,500-2,600 RPM for one full minute. Also, it needs to idle for another full minute. Everything needs to be connected and it needs to have oil showing on the dipstick. Also, it needs a functioning gas cap. The only way the inspector was able to get me through was to actually call BAR and ask for permission to "fix" the machine so that it shows "Pass".
This is all for you guys who have a big engine with a big cam, carbs, etc., who really need an SB100 exemption. For those with 60's-vintage 289's. 390's, 427's, or 428's, you might want to use the regular SPCN registration route. You don't need an SB100 exemption, you just need to keep the smog equip the same as the engine year was.

Ditto here. The SB100 # doesn't expire but the TOP does. You will need to have the updated registration fees paid in order to get a new TOP so you can drive the car to CHP and BAR. CHP is just VIN verification and to make sure your paper work is complete and matches the car. If you registered the car as "Special Construction Vehicle" and you have the SB100 number you don't need to "Pass" a tail pipe emissions test. It is purely a baseline. You need to pass a visual inspection based on the year of the block or the year the car represents. Tell the smog referee which one you want to use. My car went through BAR test well beyond what would be labeled as gross poluter status. It was tested per 1965 standards and only required a working PCV system in place. What I was spewing out the tail pipe was irrelevent.

$1044 for license and tax??? and they only want $600.00 more? Consider yourself lucky. My bill totalled up to almost 5 grand. I was honest with the DMV and to be frank, glad to pay them in this instance as now I have a Ca. smog-exempt 700 horsepower street machine. The DMV gets a little testy when you try to fraud them out of their money. -Bob

Oddly, as of 12/20, I have my registration entirely cleared up and in fact have applied a "2008" sticker on my license plate.
This whole setup was a 3 month hell at the DMV. I was expecting to be at the DMV this year, no more than 3 or 4 times. I've been there 6 times!
The most agonizing moment of the registration process was the Brake & Lamp Inspection and certification. I recommend to anyone, though our network of friends, to get in touch with one that's done component cars/SPCNS on a more regular basis. The short story to mine: spent 6 f*(&(&'in hours at "GreenSlip" and all I got was my brake certificate. They wanted two backup lamps. At another station, the "regular" guy that does Superformance's, wasn't around and their lackies indicated I might need a "third eye". I mounted some temporary backup lamps and got my Lamp Certificate because it was less expensive ($10 total) ; HINT: if your Jan 2nd paper work doesn't say you need B&L Inspection, consider yourself blessed and don't say a word to the DMV.
As far as BAR: if you get a hold of someone that's done these before, it should not be a big deal. The first thing I asked was how many he's done; he said this year, I was number 6 but it averages around 9 per year at the facility I went to. I was in and out in 45 minutes. He had the students look at the fuel cap, check oil, presence of a PCV, even checked my tach (well, that was me, trying to see how accurate it was compared to their equipment.)
Of that 45 minutes, the supervisor was really interested in the book I brought (Cobra archives) and spent 10 minutes photo copying the pictures in the book. Really nice fellow.
All I can say is, never go to GreenSlip in Sunnyvale.
