Default CA title/vin question

OK so I finally got my title in the mail the other day from the DMV, which should be a very happy thing. Unfortunately I noticed that the VIN number shows my SPF chassis number, and not the assigned blue VIN that the CHP installed on my frame.

So the question is, does it matter, and if so how do I get the DMV to fix it? Part of me says don't mess with it because I'm titled, but then again I'd hate to run into a problem down the road.

Anyone have thoughts or experience with this? Thanks,

Daryl

My chp issued vin and the vin on the title match. If everything on your end is legit, i.e. you have your sb100 number your good my friend. Go to the dmv and tell them you want it straightened out. If you have your sb100, that is your golden key to easy street. Atleast for me it was. Good luck. John

John's right. Also you don't want to be accused of changing the VIN. Eventho you didn't, it might lookt that way. Also, any insurance claim would be a huge hassle... Seems like the DMV made an honest mistake - I'm sure it can get fixed. You might need another visit to the CHP to "re-verify" the VIN, but that's just a guess.

Good luck,
Randy R...

I got lucky. The CHP issued my VIN as my chasis number. He looked at my chasis tag and said it was nicer than any tag he could make, and issued it in the same number. I'm still in the process of getting my SB100.

Yep, CHP used my SPF vin too. No problem and it looks MUCH better than the State applied tag!! See my gallery for the Superformance engraved vin plate.

Arrow Vin #: Csx4795!

Went to CHP today.
Officer M Burgett, ( a very nice fellow) inspected my car, and used my Shelby issued VIN number: CSX4795!

On to BAR next Friday!

Hey Daryl, read this thread, and you'll see what happens if you don't correct your VIN: http://www.ffcobra.com/ubb/ultimateb.../t/000147.html

Thanks guys, I went to the DMV today. Aside from having to make two trips because I didnt bring the SPF with me the first time it was reletively painless. Why they didnt trust me when I had my copy of the paperwork signed by a CHP officer I'll never know, but no matter.

The next step will be to call the BAR referee and see if they can reissue my SB100 exemption sticker with the corrected VIN, as they copied the mistake that the DMV made using the serial number. Anyone ever tried this? Advise to share? Thanks again,

Daryl

Yes, I had to do this after the DMV required that I have my VIN number changed by the CHP - and this was after I already had an SB100 sticker - long story on this one, but suffice to say, the ref at the DMV had to call Sacra-pamento because he was not willing to print me a new sticker. Ultimately, we had to hook up the smog test sniffer and re-run the complete SB100 tests all over again in order for the machine to print a new sticker.

So, yes, it can be done. My position with BAR ref was that his sticker (the original one) had a VIN number on it that didn't match the VIN that CHP assigned, so I needed a new sticker so that my vehicle would not have two VINs.

Good luck,
Randy R...

Thanks Randy,

I called the BAR today and they pretty much confirmed what you said, it can be fixed but I have to bring the car back to the referee. I'm going next week so hopefully it wont rain and I can get this done and finally cleaned up.

Thanks again for everyone's responses. I went to the BAR today and was able to get a new SPCNS SB100 exemption sticker this time with the correct VIN number on it. The new one is even on straight where the first wasn't!

In typical CA planning and process, they cannot print a new sticker without rerunning the sniffer tests, even though we all knew it was just going to fail again

Daryl

the moral of the story, read all your paperwork carefully before you leave the DMV, especially if you are getting a TOP so that you can drive your car to the CHP for a VIN number, because they will put a placeholder down under the VIN.
