Default Mass Title

I bought a Continuation CSX4872. I will have MSO but no vin. I have the number plaque 4872. I heard there was a new law sponsored by SEMA that was going to allow new "hot rods and customs" to be exempt from emissions and safety regualations. Anyone know? My concerns are a follows: If I go and get a new vin, as the registry is telling me to do, then the RMV will tell me its a new car and needs emisions. I have also heard that it takes 12 weeks to get a vin. (summers over). A few guys told me that only a few years ago people were getting out of state title companies to issue title, saying 1965 Cobra CSX4xxx. Then they would just simply go to the registry and register it as a 1965 vehicle without any headaches. Is this illegal now? Please someone help me. There has got to be a smart way to do this in MA.

My car is titled and registed as a 2006 Repica. I just got my car inspected for the second time and and "exempt" popped up on the DMV computer during the process - I was told when I got my my VIN that the car would be exempt from emissions, however I don't believe that the info was entirely accurate (like you I scoured the MA DMV web site and asked a ton of questions). My local service station is very hot rod friendly and the mechanic said he was able to enter 1966 as the year of the vehicle during the inspection process - The short MA assigned VIN allowed the ability to make the change.

Do a search on Mass registration here on Club Cobra and you'll find a ton more info.

Good luck and feel free to call me at 860-324-6003 if you want more info or advice (CT cell phone but I live in MA)

PS I tried to get the car titled as a 1966 - The state policeman at the inspection center gave me an interesting looks so I decided not to pursue the issue.

Default Ma Vin#

I was interested when you say short vin. How many numbers/letter is it? I am curious as to whether they give you a random number or whther the state police officer has any control over what numbers are issued. My car has CSX4872 stamped on the frame and a dash plaque, I have heard stories where the state police have issued a new vin using that number.

Thanks for the help.

Derek
