What is the information on the paper work? There has to be a VIN number. How much do you want for it.

It was still assigned to the car. When you gave the DMV a copy of your MSO they used it to assign/match the SPCN cert to the vin.

You can't sell the cert.

It's not transferrable (or sellable). But, if you go into the DMV and tell them you're not going to use the SB100 number, they may make it available to someone else.

when i got the permit i said i had nothing done no car etc and they gave the permit my next step would be to go to chp and get a vin assigned

I have a Kirkham that I have not finished...can I get a sb100 without my engine and trans and such?? What do you experts say???? I don't want the sb100 opportunity to slip away due to all this 'green' talk before I get ready to use it.

I was told I need the block and heads and trans reciepts.

You do NOT need to have a completed car, or an engine or a transmission in order to get a number, but you will need an MSO or previous title from another state. In order to get a temporary VIN, which is entered on your certificate, you must have the MSO or the previous title from another state.

If there is no temporary VIN on the certificate, then it is NOT valid. Proceed with caution.

As xlr8or said, it is non-transferable. Your name, address and drivers license is entered on the certificate. When you go to your CHP and BAR appointments, they should/could and may check this information against the person and car that they're validating.

a buddy did the same thing and completed his reg
we both went had no vins no anything and got "temp" bs vins
which get changed once the chp does a vin inspection and assigns one

This could cause a lot of grief I believe. I know that when I bought my car the CHP just used the VIN that had been assigned in another state. But I thought that to make the paper work complete the DMV did put a temp. VIN on it.
Which brings me to another question that was posted here a long time ago and never answered. What about a SB-100 car that is moved out of state by the owner when he transferred with his job, then a year or so later came back into Calif. I never did find out if they would accept the old SB-100 number or if he had to go through the process all over. I am not sure, but I believe he finally sold the car out of state but I don't know if that was because of the registration or he just got tired of the car and wanted something else.

Is there an assigned VIN or not? Is it blank? Originally, you said that it has no assigned VIN and then later say it received a "temp" BS vin. Everyone receives a temp BS VIN until they go through the entire process. In the CA DMV computer, the temp VIN will be tied to a person with a driver's license. I suppose you can sell anything you want, but I know first hand that the DMV does not want to change any information on that certificate.

So, if you did sell the certificate, then the "new owner" of the certifcate will have to attempt to find the right person in Sacramento to replace your information with his/her information. Of course, this assumes that you find a willing buyer and that willing buyer wants to run through the gauntlet of the DMV. The other assumption is that it's transferable and it's legally not.

Ron, once the car is legally registered out of state then the sb-100 becomes invailed. You would need to start the process all over again.

Ed - It's also my understanding that once a car that had SB100 status is registered out of state, the SB 100 is no longer valid. Someone is selling a car on Cobra Country that had SB100 and was later registered in Oregon, and is being advertised as "SB100." If someone from CA buys the car, they better find out what the rule is.

My car is the one in Oregon.

California DMV says if the SB 100 number is still "in their system they will honor it"- if a car has been registered out of California. I've done a great deal of research and have this documented through DMV.
