Default CA SB100 Question

A friend in the Santa Barbara area just contacted me and said he had been to several DMV offices in the area to get details on SB100 registration.

He reported that each office had a slightly different take on the process but the big theme was that the car had to be present at the DMV office to get the SB100 certificate.

That is not the way it was back in 2005 when I got mine, has this changed?

Any recommendation as to the most knowledgeable office in the Santa Barbara area?

Thanks

dale

The car need not be present to get an SB100 #, but you need all your paperwork.

I got my SB100 this year.
The DMV didn't need to see the car but the CHP does, to assign/verify the VIN#.
Did mine at Thousand Oaks about an an hour south of SB.
Helps to tactfully ask if anyone at the office has experience with SB100. Only a few know how to do it in each office and if they miss a step it can cost you a year of driving on temp stickers renewing every 60 days.

Dale,

Agree with RodKnock and kurtmart. The CHP will need to inspect the car, but not the DMV. Some people get lucky and avoid having to do the brake/safety stuff.

The DMV also told me that I needed to visit the BAR (which I ignored). It's a waste of time to visit the BAR before you have the SB 100 sequence number, unless you want to see how the process works and be told that your car failed miserably.

Update: Here's another great SB 100 resource:

Thanks a lot, Gentlemen! I will pass on this information to my friend. Club Cobra is the definitive site for "kit" registration.

I applaud your group.
