Default CA BAR Referees

Would anyone know when the referee stations will be open again? I know the State budget was just signed a few days ago, but I would like to know exactly when so that I can be the first caller.

At least I have a TOP to take me through 12/31/08.

Guessing that you'll just have to keep checking the web site and trying the 800#. I'm sure they're going to have a bit of a backlog to work through.

The BAR Referees have reopened. I hear they were having a contract (pay) dispute with the State. Anyway it was solved.

Made my appointment for next Thursday, first thing, in the morning. Yee haw. Almost done.

That's great Rodney! Make sure you make an extra copy of every document you have before you go back to the DMV for the final hand-off.

Should I bring donuts and coffee to the BAR appointment?

Or will this seem like a blatant attempt to curry favor.

No coffee or donuts required. Remember what happened when you brought coffee to the DMV?

Simple process...your car fails miserably as a "gross polluter", they enter the magic "get out of jail free" SB 100 code, and you're golden.

They told me to make sure the car has water and oil. I thought to myself..."uh...duh."

What? I'm gonna run my car without it?

They are going to put it on one of the dyno smog machines and run it under load. They probably have had people trailor in incomplete cars hoping it was just a visual inspection.

That would make sense to me. I thought it was an IQ test

They did the sniffer test then the dyno test on an SUV that was in front of me. They only did the sniffer test on my Superformance (no dyno).

No dyno on mine either Rodney. Did you decide on your door pillar for the sticker?

Tom, not sure yet on the sticker placement. I hope they'll let me place anywhere I want, but I think that's wishful thinking.

Do you get any water intrusion where your sticker is placed after washing your car?

Yikes! Washing with water is a big No-No! Dust with a California Duster and gently clean with a microfiber towel and detail spray.

Water on a Cobra is no fun - it gets all over the seats and behind them and dripping from the door jams. Not good.

Also, my trips to the BAR included a quick visual and sniffer, no dyno. However, the sniffer twice is done 4x (twice at idle and twice at ~2500RPM). Before you start the test, ask the Ref for a big fan to put in front of your Cobra to blow air thru your radiator (be sure it has water )

I just dust it once in a while. Did use some cleaner on the wheels to get brake dust off, but that's it.

Randy, big fan, great idea, thanks. Also, the Kirkham website refers to "hosing" the car down. I must have missed the exterior maintenance threads. I don't remember never using a hose. I wouldn't do it much, but I would think, once in a great while it would be fine, assuming one avoided water everywhere. I'm a Cobra newbie, so please excuse my ignorance.

Been a while but when I went to Evergreen college they put it on the dyno for the sniffer test. Actually I went 3 times, once to see how bad it would fail without an SB100 in 2006 (bad by the way, but gave me a reason for the DMV to issue an extra TOP), once in early 2007 with SB100 in hand, and then once again in 2007 to correct the VIN number that the DMV screwed up and it ended up on the SB100 sticker. All 3 times it was the same, dyno sniffer, and they had a big fan. The fan was crap and kept walking away from the car as it was badly out of balance but it did help.

Knowing my luck, the darn machines probably will go on the fritz the day I'm there.
