Yes! I have been trying to find someone building from the plans from the start of my build. I was hoping to find someone else building to compare notes with. I have gotten email from all around the world from other with the plans telling me I was the only one they could find that was building from them. Some of them want to start but they think there is too many problems. Like I said they are expensive but for the same kind of money you could not travel around the world and get the info that cheap. They are a good place to start.

Larry and Mark, thanks for the input. It makes me wonder how the novice Locost chassis builders are able to build/weld their own.

cobrawiki, thanks for the link and that pic. Wow, what a chassis! I can almost see how ALuminium body panel might fit up to the small dia. tube superstructure. But that's the subject of another thread.

Chuck now wants $600 for each set of his plans. There is no discount for multiple sets purchased at one time, if I remember him correctly.

As much interest there is in building original chassis you would think the info would be easy to find . Having access to an original would be a big help. Do you think we could start a thread on the Originality forum to maybe get some input from original car owners ? So that we as a group could come up with a set of plans for at least the basic frame to start.

Plans may be out there for free, but I've been unable to find them.

I think Jim's plans are a good starting point.

I don't have them, yet, but they seem a more economical starting point than Chuck's. If we find errors or discrepancies then that's our own contribution.

We could use this thread or another to document what troubles we find.

There's been a couple of requests for free chassis plans posted here on Club Cobra in the past but to my knowledge, no free ones have surfaced. Finding an original chassis, measuring, drawing, doing a tech detail of every part is a huge time investment. To then offer it free of charge just doesn't happen. Or at least, I've never heard or seen of it happening.

I would hate to have to confess how many hours I have spent researching and drawing up my stuff & by the sound of it nobody would want to pay for a copy if I was to market them on the basis of cost recovery.

I wouldn't say "nobody" but you will be trying to find a very select group of buyers; a niche group as they say.

I have limited funds for this project. I am working towards completing two others. Yeah, not one but two, duh. At the moment I am looking to see where I can get the most "bang" for my buck. I've been told I can get a frame and body for 3K each. If that's true, then $600 is 20% of either one of them.

When you decide on a price, maybe we can barter. I have collected some neat information over the years.



Running out of time? The way people are dropping around me like flies as of late, I wonder how much time I have left, too.

I just stay busy and don't waste time worrying about it.

Forrest I take it the $3000.00 frame is nothing like an original type frame. If it is an original type frame you had better jump on it before I or others here find it. I have more than that in the DOM tubing for the two cars I am building.

Not sure, but I have plan sets for - Falco, Zenith, RV4, Mustang II, Dragonfly, & others that have been interesting reading....
Forrest, your group of three is a concept that occasionally works, there is a group of ten just getting underway with GT40's in Aussie at moment on the GT40's forum... be interesting to follow the progress

I've been in communication with the Jim Thomas! He, indeed, is very personable
and quite knowledgeable about cobras.

I sent him money for his drawings yesterday. So, when they get here, I'll update.

My intentions are converting them to CAD drawings before cutting metal.

I'll find discrepancies in doing so. I am hoping some of you will help me "sort out"
those dimensions.

Are you going to build a leaf spring chassis then?
Somehow, I thought you were interested in the coil spring cars.

I built five chassis over time, mainly using Cobra Restorers prints. But also with input from Mickmate. The main consideration is, to what tolerances do you (need to) adhere to?

You may find that for overall main rail length according to ISO 13920, 7/16" (11mm) or even 5/8" (15.8mm) can be acceptable. But how do you know? And is your tape measure accurate over that length?

Wheelbase can be adjusted within reason by the control arm position. Camber curves by relocating the control arm brackets slightly.

What about angle variations? You may compromise on the anti-dive angle with no problem, but what about other angles?

How about parts being parallel, like the suspension pedestals (not easy)? Or the spacing between the main rails (easy)?

Once you have done it a few times and spent a day or two aligning all suspension you ask yourself: Must I be more accurate in welding, which is a pain, or do I spend some thinking and correcting the suspension settings and mounting points?

And to what point can I compromise? What adjustabilty is possible in the existing suspension parts? And would you make the controls arm slightly different to accommodate the chasisis?

And, where do you get those suspension drawings??

I found it easier to weld a chassis after the suspension is done. You line everything up and then weld the mount to the chassis.
