I'm surprised by the initial lack of damage. Mud is everywhere, but when I removed the air cleaner, the carb was clean and there were no signs of mud/water under the butterflies or under the valve cover breathers.
Gauges look dry, and the seats even appear to have survived. Carpet was torn out and fluids were partially drained by the auction company, but there was no water in the trans or diff and from what I can see looking through the drain holes with a light, there's still plenty of grease on the gears. Oil was a little cloudy and had just a few drops of moisture in it. I drilled the main rails with an 1/8" bit and got several cupfuls of clear/orangish water but no crud. Paint is hazy and chipped in a couple spots down low, but I can save that. Later this month we'll pull the motor, trans and tear down the diff to see what else is there. I'm excited and am clearing the schedule so we can get 'deep' into it... http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/7.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/8.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/9.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/10.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/11.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/12.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/13.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/14.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/15.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/16.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/17.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/18.JPG http://www.unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/19.JPG |

Good Luck on your find! |
The whole forklift thing had me nervous. I wouldn't have watched.
Great photos and keep us abreast of any new developments. Thank you for sharing. |
I think the forklift pic and the one with the frame peeing that yellowish water are all-time classics! :D
I agree...I would have been freaking out with the forklift operator...and probably tipping him $50 when he was done (dude handled it well). |
I would say that you may have made the deal of the year............
the water must have went down fast so it didnt sit under water very long. good fork lift driver.......that was hard to watch...... |

MUD-VPR MUDVIPR TARHEEL GTRSNK GATRSNK Idid'nt realize the shelby block was a bored out windsor block , thats lame , gotta be a 390/427/428 FE block or its just another smallblock IMHO This isn't a FFR;) SDR Was that snowman from Smokey and the Bandit on the video ?:D:LOL: ________ Vaporgenie vaporizer |
Whoa! I missed that as well, it's a small block you say (don't care what it's stroked/bored to)? That's surprising.

sankehunter ... Great video and photos! The car was definitely under water and mud, but it does not look like is was under for an extended period of time. You have a lot of disassembly, cleaning and rejuvenation to go ... but when it's all said and done, the Cobra will be back on the road and have one heck of a history! Thanks for posting ... looking forward to seeing your progress :)

Sorry my bad . I went to the shelby engine site and the 427 crate was a windsor , the fe were 452 and up ; missed the FE alumi block page . You can buy a 427 fe alumi block , just not a crate aluminum 427 FE . Sorry for the confusion . Its my first day:LOL:
SDR ________ Buy mflb |
definitely an Fe...
I had to pull the pushrods to yank the intake ;)
Here's the most recent photos. The worst damage was surface rust and galvanic reaction in the bores - not pitted yet, just some crud starting to accumulate. Lifters had some water in them (the antifreeze is there from pulling the intake), cam has slight surface rust on the lobes which may clean off. Despite all this, the motor still turned freely and there's no signs of freeze damage. There were some interesting 'defects' that probably wouldn't have affected anything for awhile, but you never know...Intake bolts were turning black and cruddy from contact with antifreeze and aluminum, and several sections of the intake gaskets were tearing or separating...Hmm... Lotsa dirt! http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/29.JPG http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/28.JPG http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/30.JPG http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/32.JPG http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/34.JPG http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/36.JPG http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/39.JPG http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/44.JPG http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/43.JPG http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/50.JPG http://unique-classics.com/bellastrada/cobra/53.JPG |
That's looking alot cleaner inside the motor than I expected. That's great! I see it's a strap type u-joint on the trans output. That makes it easy as they're a bugger to get at the rear driveshaft flange. What's the Holley control on the dash for? Looking good.
