Had the pleasure of meeting him a few times over the years...always a gentleman. Enjoyed watching him talk to folks like he had all the time in the world.

We won't see his kind again soon.

Vaya con dios...

Even prior to getting my liscense in the late 70s as young boy the iconic battles between Shelby and Enzo, Ford and Ferrari, vettes (GS) and Cobras and the absolute domination of the Shelby/Ford GT40 program had me riveted. For me it all came together in the 427C and SC......thunderous power raw but intelligent design and engineering, all driven. Y a guy from a Texas chicken farm who loved horse power and hot rodding. More than that Shelby couldn't stand loosing, particularly as an Amercan..... It obviously irked him se our automotive industry sitting in the rear view window of arrogant European manufacturers and racers......that American pride and Hell bent for leather, can do attitude just took over and in a big way........just a couple of years all boot strapped and bang Ferrari, Porche, Jag, Sunbeam, vettes...all in the rear view mirror. He also knew how far to go with HP and match it with real driving tallest.......raw direct connection with the road......where real driving skill combined with a powerful primal alpha beast became one and the combined entity was unbeatable......just epic. No power steering, brakes, advanced aerodynamics.....just the correct combination of base elements to win with absolute authority........that legacy left behind cars that are not for the faint of heart or bunglers......Shelby unleashed Darwin on those folks
CS is more than just an Auto Icon.....he was a real Amercan. RIP

Carroll Shelby captured three national sports car championships in the United States and is the only man to win 24 Hours of Le Mans as a driver, team owner and auto manufacturer. I don't see that record ever be beat again. Made the Ford Mustang a performance car and still the Shelby Mustang is tops on peoples wish list. From an enlisted pilot in WWII and chicken farmer in Texas to the World Stage Automotive Icon...what a great American!

The tributes are fantastic and thoroughly deserved.

It's only naural that I took my Superformance Coupe out for a run this afternoon and made sure I gave it some proper welly. It's an absolute privilege.

RIP great man.

Sad Day, but what a great life! You will be remembered for eternity. Thanks for sharing the times we had together and your Cobra CSX1001 with me through the Shelby Foundation. Thanks for the Legacy you leave behind!

I don't feel sadness, but rather reflective of a man who pursued his dreams. Few on Earth will ever get to experience what Shelby did. He was both loved and hated, but in the end I don't think that matters. What will survive is an impressive string of actions that held us in total amazement. His actions have brought countless individuals together that otherwise may have never crossed paths. These friendships are bonded by passions that Shelby planted. Just that one fact tells me that he was a great man.

I'm personally grateful that I am able to live a part of my dream, because of his dream!

Shelby's life was a life well lived. Keep driving man, keep driving!

Thank you Mr Shelby!

Default Sad day for car fans! RIP Carroll!

Thought I would share my first direct encounter with Carroll back in the day, as they say!

Yeah, he was something else for sure! A nice guy and a good driver too. I met him when I was a course martial on the SCCA Flag Team in Southern California. We were at the Palm Springs Road Races in 1960. Carroll was the race/course director and came to our corner driving his personal Maseratti Coupe. We had to tear down the course during "lunch time" to allow a commercial (one per day) flight to land, reload, and take off again. After they took off, we reset the corner, hay bales and all. He said, well Jerry, I think that looks like it did this morning, what do you think? Should we try it out? Of course I answered; "Yes!" We got in his Maser and did a couple of hot laps after the phone girls (my wife Trudy at our corner) gave all a "heads up". We made a small change after the first lap on the entry into the turn. Then we did a few more laps, just to be sure it was OK! Carroll had had his first major heart attack, and had been ordered not to race anymore, so this was his excuse to get in a few laps. Fond memories in-deed!
Jerry

Any automotive magazine worth reading will have his name mentioned in it somewhere. He was that influential in the automotive industry.
