Nick,
Rather than the typical pounding out of the aluminum to create a rounded or flat flare, a strip of metal was added at the top of the rear fenders. This keeps the same stock flare look but allows wider tires & rims.

CSX2271 (California plate: 518 RAL) -- can anyone confirm this?

The car sitting next to Gordon Gimbel's original USRRC 289 Cobra (CSX2514) #52 is a John's Custom Fabrication replica that was built by and owned by Gary Cook in Sacramento, Ca. Gary was running the #49 Datsun 240Z that was pitted next to Gordon's Cobra. Gary will be glad to hear that he did such a good job on the car that is was questioned as an original.

Are you absolutely sure about that? Because the photo of CSX2271 on page 185 of the 2008 SAAC registry looks exactly like the one I photographed. Silver mink. Black quick jacks (rear facing). Unique chin spoiler. Grille insert. Torq Thrust wheels. Raydyot side mirror midway up the window frame.

What is Gary's license plate number? The one I photographed is 518 RAL (California). It's got the "Carroll Shelby Motors" license plate frame and a sticker on the trunk lid that reads, "In memory Nancy 19."

Pls don't take my questions the wrong way. Am just trying to figure out which car it is.

SunDude,

No problem. I’m absolutely positive it is Gary’s car. He is a good friend and I was at his shop today. The “In memory of Nancy” sticker on the trunk is in memory of Gordon’s late wife Nancy Gimbel and her Lotus 19B “Pacesetter Ford” track car.

OK. Thanks for the info.

Maybe the registry photo is old/wrong. I just found some pics of CSX2271 from the Mecum auction in May 2008, and it looks very different from the registry pic. Wire wheels. Chrome overriders. No Raydyot mirror. Looks like a nice 289 street roadster.

Wouldn't be the first error in the registry.

Default CSX numbers at Laguna Seca

Brian -

Good to see you again in Monterey.

The red 427 with Webers was CSX3318. The dark blue 289 you list as CSX2439 had a sign on it that said it was CSX2439. The red 7000 series with the number "24" on it was CSX7024. The red 289 with dual quads was CSX2571.

regards,

Jeff

Jeff,
I'm curious, how did you determine that was CSX3318?
I ask because of the number of changes to the car
that have been made since I last saw it. Thanks

Jim -

I went on the Cobra 1000 last year, and recall Gary saying he was thinking about "toning it down a bit"'.

That, coupled with this:

....led me to the conclusion

Thanks Jeff, That makes sense now ;-)
I guess sunglasses are no longer required when looking in the engine compartment.

It was good to see you again too, Jeff. Thanks for the info on the unidentified cars.

This now leaves only one 289 street Cobra unidentified. Does anyone recognize this particular car?

CSX2??? blue

I had already snapped a photo of CSX2571, but that was with the taped-on number 8 which is probably why I didn't recognize it in the other photo.

CSX2571

I have finally gone through all my photos of the event, and have pictures of 121 different Cobras. That's an amazing showing.

I managed to capture/identify 96 original Cobras at Laguna Seca, and 120 for the entire Monterey Car Week. Guess I missed a few.

What an incredible turnout! Will there ever be another event that brings together so many Cobras...?

Without doubt a bucket list event for Cobra guys. I gotta say I applaud Brians enthusiasm and homework on events like this. I must praise and thank Ned and his helpers for doing such a fantastic job. Yes there's some errors in a document this lengthy. I had an owner refuse to sign my registry as it was a "load of rubbish" and signing it just concurred with it. If it's no fun for ya stay home! If you've got some positive or informative input get it in to them. To finish on a high note the current owner of the last 427 got the first owner of the car out to Pebble with it. Stories from guys like that and this kind of homage to the history really makes events like that for me.
Go Cobra guys!

Fantastic job!!! I am curious if your Cobra count included the Cooper Ford King Cobra and the 1967 King Cobra #2?

Thanks for sharing the photographs I wish I could have gone!!

Just curious if you had Gordon Gimble sign your registry? He owns csx 2514, if so I believe I was hanging out in his pit when you approached him.

I was fortunate enough to attend the wonderful racers seminar Pete and Gayle Brock hosted with an incredible line up of drivers.
They also did their own Coupe gathering within the main event.
I did have Gordon sign his car in the registry. After people got over their shock of me carrying that big book around they were not only happy to sign it but were calling friends over to have them sign their cars. Other people saw and recognized it and came up to me wanting to look up and sign their car. Some family members photographed them signing the book. I think it was fun for them and it surely was for me.
