Yes it is a "Shelby" and you have to give props to SAI .. to have structured a marketing program in which they are able to have Superformance build a car for them .. that they can then put in the Shelby registry and mark up something like $50,000 because it is sold by SAI rather than Superformance. I really like the slab side and if I were to add another cobra replica to the garage I would have to look really hard at Superformance and ERA for a great car at a price point around $75,000 (depending on motor).

The Cobra in question was not manufactured by Superformance, it was built by SAI at the old Las Vegas facility. Some day someone will have to differentiate the timeline of the Continuation Series Cobras pre and post Shelby's death so there is a better understanding as to who what and where on these Cobras.

I agree with John.
At some point Vegas cars should be valued different as CS was still around.
4000 and 6000 seem to be lightly different.
It also depends on the car. Right, even this said not all 7000 series are not created equal.

At some point, if I were a fiberglass Shelby Cobra buyer, then I'd want to know too. Somewhere in the midst of all that fiberglass production, the bodies had body/paint issues related to some sort of "shrinkage."

Seems like every SAI continuation car has a distinct or unique provenance. Shelby gets glass bodies and chassis from Superformance, aluminum bodies from Kirkham, some earlier glass bodies were produced by other parties (I believe) and a couple .. in house in Las Vegas. You would think that a "SAI built car" would be clearly differentiated from a "Superformance built to Shelby spec", as for somebody who is laying out premium pricing for a "Shelby continuation" car .. it would seem that one that was actually wrenched by an SAI employee would have more intrinsic value than a South African built car. But my replica is a genuine ERA turnkey .. and I know who wrenched it. Be good gents.

For several years, SAI was having the glass and carbon fiber bodies and rollers fabricated by HST at their facility just across the border in Tijuana Mexico, then shipped up to Vegas. Actually a pretty impressive facility according to a friend of mine that visited there.

According to this old thread from here on CC, looks like that facility was shut down sometime around 2010.

HST mexico CLOSED

The cars you referenced as being built by HST are usually referred to that way in their serial numbers by an "LA" (example CSX4XXXLA), the "LA" stood for Latin America. I believe there was also a "SA" suffix for South African built cars, pre-Superformance building all of the fiberglass cars.

That is only sort of true.

All CSX4xxxLA cars were built by HST.

Not all HST cars were CSX4xxxLA. In fact, only a small portion.

All carbon fiber cars were HST.

HST was a supplier of both carbon fiber and fiberglass cars.

Some dealers chose to avoid the HST-built cars, while others preferred them and I believe until HST folded would specify HST rollers.

Are there SA suffixed Shelbys? I don't recall seeing any ever mentioned here or in the registry.

The LA story as it was told to me by Amy Boylan, then president of SAI. A group of wealthy people from Mexico City all wanted Cobras at the same time. At the time the lead time was quite long, but HST agreed to build the 6 cars "in house" without affecting normal Shelby production schedules (I assume they added people). As a result of the cars being built in Mexico HST also installed power trains and sold them as completed vehicles.

When I bought mine it had been imported into the US and had a CA title as a 65 Shelby Cobra.

I thought the "LA" was used to designate cars destined for Latin America and not the US.

I know my car was assembled in Vegas in 2001-02, so that would give some kind of reference as to time frames when SAI was still assembling the rollers in house before they started farming them out.

In the world of fine art assets sculptures are often made in multiples and a sculpture
made during an artists lifetime is far more valuable than one made after his death.
A lifetime cast of "The Thinker" by Rodin would be much more desirable than one cast
after his death because he would have supervised the casting and patination on the
former while the latter castings would never have seen his hand and would never have
been signed or approved by him. I won't get into what Shelby was willing to sign...!

Actually the reason for the "LA" and "SA" suffixes after the serial numbers was because SAI had used up all the 4XXX numbers and had not yet started using the 6XXX numbers.

Actually yes. Up in Monterey at the track a few years ago, my friend and I got a chance to visit with him and talk about good stuff. A kid came up and asked him to sign a hat. He looked down at the kid and said "Young man, if you can tell me who I am, I will sign that thing for you. Do you know who I am?" and the kid said "not really". He said "get out of here kid and give that hat back to your Dad and tell him nice try!"
