CSX4000 - Front Brake Upgrade Question
Hi,
I've recently bought/installed the Front BAER CSX 4000 brake kit (rotors/calipers) and replaced the 1" bore front master cylinder by a 0.625" to improve brake on my csx but ....Braking is not yet optimized from my point of view. For those who installed the same brake kit (or the Wilwood kit) which modification have you done on the master cylinders (front and rear) and/or on the pedal (holes locations for master cylinders) ? Is the total front caliper piston area larger or smaller in the new calipers as compared to the old calipers? What was your pedal feel and brake performance before and after the change? Kind of curious why you went down in master cylinder size. Cheers Greg |
Hi Greg,
The old calipers came from 90' Mustang (like all Csx 4000 I think) and are single piston. The new ones are 4 pistons so larger than the previous ones. Before the change the pedal was hard and braking was not good at all (master cylinder diameter was 1"). I went down in master cylinder size (0.625") to get more pressure in the brake lines and in the calipers. Of course with a smaller master cylinder pedal travel has increased. I feel now better braking but not enough as I was waiting for. I didn't modify the rear master cylinder diameter yet nor the pedal and that's my questions ? Do I need to replace (smaller) rear master cylinder ? Do I need to modify the brake pedal ?? Thanks, OliveR |
You may need to do some math on your calipers surface area. That old single piston caliper had a large diameter and because it slides you double it. Your new 4 piston calipers may have less total surface area. Which would actually call for a smaller bore master cylinder. But that size master cylinder sounds very small. Of course depends on so many variables, including pedal geometry. A master cylinder that small would work best with small diameter pistons in the calipers.

Also size of caliper pistons does not correlate with braking ability so easily. It's too complex for me

To know where your at I would put gage on each line at caliper to read pressure you have at each corner. With pressure information you could talk to Wilwood engineering dept and pick their brains. Ask for guys that race cars themselves. I forget his name.

I think the current Shelby CSX4000 now comes with the BAER 4 piston front calipers.
Why not contact Shelby American and ask their advice. I suspect your choice of a 0.625" MC is too small and that a 1.00" MC would be closer to the right size. Checking your line pressures would be a good idea, but you'll learn more from Shelby American about the setup you should be using. Cheers Greg |
