Avon tires for CSX 6000 series 427 S/C
I have learned so much from these pages. To include that Avons are highly recommended for a street tire. And maybe occasional track use, but primarily a street tire [and DoT approved here in the US].
My questions: 1. Which Avon tire do you recommend? 2. What sizes? Front and rear? Thanks again for your insights. ~ Brian |

I prefer the 225/65 up front and 295/50 rear.
I am not a fan of super wide fronts.... I've had two sets on order now since November, tires are the next issue across the US. No tires at Kelsey with huge backlog Kraus ??? Once mom's mini van is w/o tires the public will realize the situation at hand in the US. Most likely the blame will be Russia however I had trouble last year as well. |

Yes, I should have specified 15" rims.
Avon seems to promote the CR6ZZ as the tire of choice for Cobras. Is that the preference here? |
Yes, the CR6ZZ’s are the way to go. I have 245’s on the front with no rubbing issues and 295’s on the back.

Preference for 225/65 up front

I have 225/65-15 fronts and 295/50-15 rears on order from Roger Kraus at the moment. I believe the rears have arrived at Kraus while the fronts are due to arrive this month.

Appreciate the feedback on your preferred tire sizes.
So far, unanimous agreement that the 295/50s are the way to go for the rear. Up front, preferences for both the 225/65s and the 245/60s. Can anyone explain the pros and cons here? Again, many thanks! |

Both have essentially identical heights / diameters, so that's a wash. Section and tread width for the 245/60R15 are wider by 0.8" than the 225/65R15, so that's a consideration if clearances are limited. Worth noting is the 'Approved' rim width for 225/65R15 is 6.5"-8.0", with the 'standard' width being 7.0". For 245/60R15, the 'Approved' rim width is 7.5"-9.0", with a 'standard' rim width of 8.5". If you're running 7" wide wheels you're therefore limited to running 225/65R15. Conversely, if your wheels are 8.5" wide, then you'd need the wider tires. The extra tread width on the 245/60R15 tires will increase turning effort at low speeds - which may be a consideration if you're not running power steering. The extra width should also increase grip at the front end which will affect your handling. If your car is already neutral in its handling, then wider tires could result in oversteer. If you're experiencing understeer, then wider tires will help to reduce that. IMO, for a car running 295/50R15 on the rear, 245/60R15 seems like a better match than does 225/65R15. |
Rim width was one of the main reasons I chose the 225/65 over the 245/60. I have 7.5" wide rims on front. I didn't want to be at the narrow end of the recommended range, opted for being in the middle of the range.

We have done a number of CSX Continuation Cobras. On the front we were using 245/65 15 but the steering was very heavy, especially at low speeds. We switched to 225 and steering was vastly improved. On the rear we go with the 295/50 15.
Here is a process we do where the AVONs, or any other manufacture, are turned into GOODYEAR Blue Streaks…….these were Dunlops that we did for Legendary Motorcars in Canada. |
