CAV Shelbys registration

Does anyone know if the CAV cobras are now considered as kits when registering, since they do not meet federal safty laws and are being imported?I have been told that this is something that has changed and not to many people may be aware of, any imput from recent buyers? Tout

I'm no expert, but I believe there is no difference between the 2000, 4000, 7000 continuation Cobras and the CAV 4000's- they all come only with a "Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin," or MSO. Registration of these cars would then be bound by your state laws.

Yes they will be continuations but,I think these new CAV cars will have the word kit in the MSO so that they can import with no safty issues.Tout

Why? what would the difference be, from SPF and the other makers importing cars?Its not like Kirkham that imports parts and assembles here, these CAV cars are being sold as rollers. Tout

I don't know if tout is but I am! I'm also interested what others have to say. I've been told by Bob Marsh that the MSO's state "1965 component roller". Does anyone know how that will impact registration?

If I were in the market I to would be looking at the CAV cars, Im hearing that SPF may go up 10% in 2004, not sure if SA will have to follow.It all comes down to what the exchange rate is I guess.Either way , kit or comp roller if I liked the car I would buy it for what it is , not just because SA is selling it.Tout

Some states may consider a component roller as a kit and give the car a new VIN , all states seem to differ ,but from what I see posted most seem to be like PA and more are changing.This seems to be an ongoing issue,good today not the next,who knows, in the next 10 yrs we may not be able to reg at all.Tout

From what little I could find out, any existing registrations before CS bought into CAV would Most Likely, and I emphasize (most likely) be grandfathered in and you would be ok but I can't get any answer on what if you want to sell the car later on. As for getting one now, California is a toal disaster as I have received at least 10 different answers ranging from they can't be registered period, to you can register then under SB-100 if you can get one of the 500 numbers. If the state DMV doesn't even know then how are we supposed to know. That is one reason I am not looking into any car now as I don't think that in a few years you will be able to register anything in this state. This is all going to come to a crashing head one of these days soon I fear and no one will be able to register any vehicle unless it is built by one of the major manafacturers and meets all emission and crash standards.

I think that the cars that are registered in the past will be ok, too much paper work to go back on . It seems to me that 1965 mustangs might get scarce if people try to use it as a rebodied car on their cobras, has that ever come up? Tout

I am guessing that you mean taking a 1965 Mustang and putting a Cobra body on it and then using the Mustang data plate and identification. If that is what you are saying then you are back in that gray area and definately out of bounds in California. If that would work I have access to several older bodies and frames that a Cobra body could be put on but then I wold not be able to register it here in this state unless I did so as a 2003 Cobra replica. Can't do that because it won't meet all the new DOT regulations. Nothing short of a tank on DOT approved wheels will meet all the requirements.

Ron, I was thinking of people just using the VIN# only, this is really red as far as I can see, jail time , but would someone try it? Most mustangs are reg as a date / coup/conv title usally does not say mustang, I know the VIN# would call it a mustang though. Tout

Oh yeah, that would be safe because if the Highway Patrol ever stopped you it is unlikely they know what a "Mustang" actually looks like anyway.

Now if the Officer just happens to be DRIVING a Mustang himself, just tell him yours is "real" and his is a "replica". Piece of cake!

Perhaps if you told them it was a highly modified Mustang body that was your own design !!!! Who knows.
