Original 427 S/C tonneau

Did original 427 S/C's ever have tonneau covers?

Is there any place to get good quality tonneau covers without the hole pre-punched so I can fit them already to the thingies on my car to attach the soft top?

Call Chuck at Cobra restorers. He will sell you the cover and the lift a dots and lend you an original cover to use as a template if he still has it.

I have had no trouble finding local upholstery guys who will make a cover, and the prices aint bad.

All Cobras were delivered with soft top and tonneau.

I think all the replacement tonneaus are shipped with the lift-a-dot hardware separate and the skin unpunched...so that it can be fitted to existing studs

There are TWO styles available as I recall (yeah, right, memory...).

There is a short which covers the cockpit.
There is a long which goes rearward to the original lift-a-dot location.

There must have been a short version on the originals at some point,
otherwise I fail to see why its available??? Its unclear what if anything
the rear of the short version snaps to, but I'm certain it would look very
vintage.

Anybody got photos up close of what they looked like (I assume naugahyde) and attachment issues up around dash? Do I have to line the little tits along the dash board, too?
I always thought they looked really cool, one of the defining elements of a Cobra, but nobody seems to have or use them much. Is there something wrong with them (flap in the breeze too much, make it unable to shift gears comfortably, or something) that made them fall from grace? Did originals cover both sides, with a zipper down the middle? Or just passenger side with smooth seem on the medial edge? Did they actually work in the event of rain? I've got a soft top which fits really tight (I think its shrunk over the years or something), but can't figure out how to get in the damn car when it's on, without a jaws of life on standby.

Of course, with a black, uninsulated tonneau in the Texas sun, you could one-up Domino's Pizza, and put some raw pizzas on the passenger seat, and leave the store immediately, and when you got to the house, they'd be ready.

The cover picks up several studs across the dash cowl as well.

There is a zipper down the center, to use it as a half-cover while you drive.

Also, I believe you will have to have custom tailoring done to any one you buy for your car...since it will not have the relief for the roll bar....so, you should probably have it cut, sewn and installed by a top guy.

Most all British roadsters (Triumph, MG, etc.) in that era came with a tonneau.

Had one on my Triumph back then...used it a lot when short-term parking, more to keep passing hands out of the inside. You can drive with it but...you look stupid doing it.

I'm an expert in looking stupid. Seriously, people didn't drive with them on? I kinda thought they did (see pic- if I can load it). If you really should take it off to drive, forget it, I barely have time to drive the car, much less spend 15 minutes donning and doffing a finicky manual tonneau.

Does anyone know of the approx stud spacing?
They appears wider across the back 6 and goes down a lot to the 5 that go down from the hollow to the door shut, I am guessing as I have played with dividers etc at 8" across the back and 4.5" for the others!
