Actually the ugly kit car which substituted for Elvis's white Cobra is on display at the Hollywood Casino in Tunica, Mississippi.

I think one of the old SAAC magazines has a short story on the stunt double at a different museum quite a while ago.

Here are some screen caps of the mysterious kit car which substitutes for Elvis's 427 comp Cobra when he's run off the road by Shelley Fabares in the opening scene of the movie.

I'm grateful they didn't subject an original Cobra to this treatment, but does anyone have any idea what this monstrosity really is?

I think the stunt-double car was a P.O.S. 1200. Kinda rare today, mainly because no one wanted one when they were new. And yes, there was an article in the Shelby American club magazine many years ago about this particular car (I wrote it) when it was on display at a museum in Orlando, Florida, billed as a 427 comp Cobra as driven by Elvis in Spinout. Yeah, right.

Aw, common.

Shelley might not be Ann Margaret, but she's no monster!

At the "Jimmy Velvet Museum" as I recall.............

I'm not sure what car was nose down in the water, couldn't recognize the tail lights. Sure wasn't a snake. I like the scene where they were racing through the streets in downtown Vegas, and across Hoover Dam.

when the next scene comes along, the car half floating in the river is a stunt-double that looks like a Cobra much in the same way that Joan Rivers looks like Angelina Jolie.
Ned THAT is damn funny. I'm on the floor typing upside down I'm laughing so hard.

Who did the last Plastic job on her? Gives new meaning to the phrase Cat Eyes.

Wrong movie. You must be thinking of "Viva Las Vegas," which also has the distinction of co-starring Ann Margret at her yummiest. I looked for that one too in the Big Lots bin, but it wasn't there.

I did manage to get a $3 copy of "Speedway" also which is supposed to have a Cobra in it too, but haven't had the chance to watch it yet.

I read somewhere that original Cobras were also used in the Elvis movie "Speedway" (1968), co-starring Nancy Sinatra.

Well, I watched that groaner the other day and didn't see any Cobras in it, anywhere. Did I miss something?

I just came across this article on Hemmings Blog which identifies "the monstrosity in the river" as a Microplas Mistral.

According to Hemmings, the Mistral was a fibreglass rebody over an Austin Healey chassis and was distributed under license in the U.S. by Bud Goodwin, of (later) Fiberfab fame.

Now that is a handsome car. I wonder why you don't see more of them?
