Paint code of Viking Blue 50th anniversary Shelby 289 FIA Cobra?
I’m looking for the Viking Blue paint code of the 2014 50th anniversary Shelby 289 FIA Cobra. Does anyone have any idea of this paint code? It seems to have more green that other Viking blue.

Thanks Tony - I tried but no reply yet

The PPG, Ditzler paint code for Viking Blue is 12494. It was a 1963 only color available on the regular Ford, Falcon and Fairlane models. I hope that helps.

I asked Trevor Legate some years ago about paint codes for Viking Blue for my 289FIA Cobra replica.
He directed me to a particular photo in one of his books that was a very close match to Viking Blue. I looked for late model cars that were a close match to that picture, "late model" so that I could easily obtain a paint code. The one I settled on just happened to be a Ferrari colour on a friend's 308 GTS. The code that I used is "AZZURRO MET. FER 505/C" if that's any use to you. You can see the result in my gallery if that's of interest. I am very pleased with the colour, FWIW :3DSMILE: Cheers! Glen |
If your car is a Hi Tech built composite body car then this is what the code is:

Thank you all for your contributions.
It seems that the Viking Blue color of the Shelby 50th Anniversary FIA Cobra is greener than the PPG 12494 or the Azzuro Met? Pierre Currently building an ERA 427 |
Please don't attempt to evaluate shades or differences from one shade to the next with photos. Many factors change the way a camera records an image (color temp settings, being the most obvious), and many factors change the way a monitor or photo lab presents that image to your eye.
You have to use spray out cards (or similar) and evaluate paint choices in different lighting situations. |

I had a friend ask me about his engine paint colour if I felt it was correct. I said "I'll wait to see it in the flesh". Beautifully correct in the flesh. Not even close in the photos. Never ever trust photos of anything from any device. Gary |
To the OP, 427StreetCobra, are you looking for touch up paint for an existing car, or are you painting the whole car?

OK, I won't trust pictures too much, however, on the picture below there are 2 Viking blue cars and the 50th anniversary 289 car looks quite different.
My painter will prepare 3 samples for me... @Glen – I’m painting the whole car Cheers, Pierre |
Hi Pierre,
As you are finding out, when you line up two cars that are claimed to be painted Viking blue, there can be significant differences. If you look at the pictures of the Falcon and the F100 shown here.... http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/paintdet...%20Blue%7C8906 ....you'll see some marked differences in Viking Blue. Also can you rely on the various paint suppliers' interpretation of the original early '60s Ford paint code? If not, I would suggest that when you find a Cobra 289 painted in a Viking Blue interpretation that you like, speak to the owner and take note of his car's paint code. Alternatively, could do as mentioned previously and find a late model car that looks like a match to what you think Viking Blue looks like, obtain its paint code (from the owner or the manufacturer) and go with that. If you're fortunate like I was, you can potentially see the car's colour in the shade, in bright sunlight, under fluoros etc. and know (approximately) what your car will look like under those conditions. Last thing you want to do is pick a code, have the car painted and be disappointed. Good luck! Cheers, Glen |
