Default Gentleman Tom Payne

I was re-reading some Cobra history today and it occured to me what a great impact Tom Payne had on the history of the Cobra racing effort.

Is he alive and well today? If so, where does he live, and is he still active in any form of motorsports?

Question Probably not..

...he was well into his 40's in those 60's periods.

Since I don't know the overwhelming majority of family, I'm curious iffn maybe he is/was family. I'm a Payne too.

Does Mrs. Turnpike say your a pain...I mean Payne...too?

You know, I have to admit, I'm kinda embarrased. Doing all this Cobra stuff, and I don't know a ton about their history. It isn't that I don't care and am not at all interested, I just find that I like my car now and enjoy the hell out of it. I even have a Cobra book, got it months ago. I've read about 4 pages of it. Just haven't had time. Cobras were Zora Arkus Duntovs' creation, right?? Or was that Harley Earl...the guy who designs Buicks now.

Bruce...

Tom Payne was at the SAAC Nationals four years ago.
I don't recall if he made the reunion at Fontana 2 years ago.

You might try contacting one of the folks at SAAC HQ for his present status... they have a 'registry' of all former SA people.

I think a fellow by the name of Bob Shaw maintains it.

They sure should be able to give you an update.

I received a couple of pics from an old friend of Tom Payne's named Barry Nelson. Barry worked for Tom in the '60's and kindly provided these original pictures of Tom's FIA car which raced at Lime Rock, Ohio and Michigan in the '60's. The pics are taken circa 1966. Tom is shown in the one pic with a factory works driver of Ford Cortinas named Barry Addison. Enjoy.

Default Gerber-Payne Special

Probably not that well known but fellow cobra driver Dan Gerber and Tom Payne were partners in a mid engined sports racer called the Gerber Payne Special. It was the McKee Mk3 that was built for Bob Johnson and powered by a 289 with McKee transaxle. It's shown here at Bridgehampton USRRC in '65.

And here is a partial image of their super cool truck taken at Greenwood Roadway.

I do not know the the # of the green car in the pic. According to my info, I think Tom drove red CSX2430 in most of his races.

May he rest in peace.
