Mk. IV history--did they import race cars to U.S?
I found these color slides I took at the Long Beach Grand Prix concours a few years ago
(I don't know if they still have the event but they way overcharged spectators something like $50 to get in) of an A.C. Mk. IV
with a full 427 Cobra comp style set of accoutrements including racing plexiglass windscreen, 427 Cobra S/C style sidepipes coming out of the body,
wide wheels, rollover hoop, etc. It was midnight blue with red and white hood and tail stripes. I think the engine was a 351-C though the cars were officially imported with off the shelf fuel injected 5.0 liter V8s. I have since read that, whle the U.S. model's specs were set in stone, that over in Germany and other counries you could order other engines, even a 427, or order it without an engine. I talked to one person who heard of a U.S. resident ordering one without an engine. What I would like to know is--I was told three of these Competition style cars were being imported ( I seem to remember Marty Yacoobian and Ric Cole being involved) and wonder if anybody else knows if it was possible to buy a non-U.S. spec. Mk.IV in the U.S. back in the '80s.
