Default 427 Cobra raced in Mexico?

I was at a meeting of the history buffs in Burbank
and a Mexican guitarist who builds model cars showed me
pictures of a white 427 Cobra that was raced in the Sixties in Mexico by a team which ran race cars for about ten years. I was wondering if anyone knew of this
Mexican team, and whether the car stayed in Mexico. I don't have the name of the team now but will look for it or ask him if he is at the next meeting. He also had a very fine quality coffee table type book on the Rodriguez brothers who were racing in the Fifties, I believe one of them won a race at age 15. They never drove for Shelby who could have hired them as they were up and comers but were very hot drivers; mostly foreign cars, and both perished at the wheel while racing.

I will ask my brother. He seems to know everything on these cars.

Default Here's a clue...

I am sorry I wrote the info on a cocktail napkin and only a tatter
was left when I found it, two months and 10,000 miles later. the word Tavaso.
And another word IUSA.
I seem to remember it was two brothers, like the Rodriguez brothers but of course from the Sixties world of racing, not the Fifties. I think they later had a NASCAR type car and a Trans Am Mustang. Now I will have to go back to the historical group and find the guitarist to ask for their name again. This was one of those things that seemed of little interest at the time but now that I realize someone may have heard of the car, I am trying to track it down (by the way this was before there was replica Cobras so I am thinking it's real)

I actually have some old B&W photos of the car. I'll copy and post the pics later.

Default Mexico Car

Sounds like 3011. The big question mark is what did he have under that hood to require that huge scoop?

Dave

Thanks for the pictures!

Guessing by the holes cut throughout the front of the car the scoop was probably part intake and part engine ventillation.

Great vintage pics.......

Hi Dave,

is there any info about csx number of this track dog ?
maybe, she has got fiber body from "Allied Industries" since they're making bodies since 1968. (take a look to unopened oil cooler, front lights, different hood scoop, different rear body shape)

Regards
Ozgur

Default Really impressed with the detective work

Must be the same car, I didn't remember the scoop or the tiny windscreen.
I will print them out and take them to the next historical meeting to see if we are talking the same white car. If it is 3011, that sounds like an early 427 Cobra, I am surprised that a foreign team got one so soon in the run, or maybe this is already after its US racing career was over, and after Ford made it clear to Shelby that there would be no funds to campaign a big block Cobra (they preferring he turn the GT40 into a winner).
As far as it possibly being an early replica, I thought the whole replicas started with Arntz, in the early '70s, and the guitarist who showed me the pictures seemed to think it was a genuine AC Cobra.
Mr. Turbull, if you want to trade some pics, give me a holler, I have various old Cobra pics I would trade for a good front 3/4 & rear 3/4 of this Mexican car.

These are the only 3 pics I have. I'd be willing to trade one of the front shots for another 427 car if you're interested.

You should know how much Comp cars changed hands in their first few years..

CSX3011 crossed at Mecum in 2006; from their write-up on the car:

Quote:
CSX 3011...was the first of the production 427 Competition Cars that wasn’t pre-sold to a customer. An internal Shelby American memo listed 3011 as a “Shelby/Salvadori” car to be tested and then sent to the “show car” department for storage. Early in 1966, three 427 Cobras, including this car, were rented to MGM Studios for use in an Elvis Presley movie which was released as “Spinout.”...From there the car traveled to Mexico where it was owned and raced by hall of fame racer, Moises Solana.
I did a photo and detail shoot of CSX3011 this past summer...it is back in red with full windscreen, in the hands of a prior owner.

Good Discussion...

Hi Ron,

As always the standard of fact based information on original CSX Cobras.

BTW is there any information as to when a new Shelby Registry will be printed?

Thanks, Tony.

The Registry was scheduled for a June print run, with every effort to have it out before SAAC-33 in August.

They had the 'job' scheduled with the printer...and got notice in the first week of May that the printer was closing his doors.

SAAC is recovering and has said that it will ship by December.

Default White Cobra in Mexico

The car that raced on the 60's was from Grupo Iusa and was raced by pilot Moises Solana and it was a white 427 Cobra, but later they bought a 289 and raced to.
I am a friend of Nanan Solana who is the Moises brother.
If you want more info search Moises Solana and there is a lot information of him.
