Shell Valley Lower Rear Shock Mounts
Guys.....I can't get near my car or I'd check myself.....but does anyone remember what size bolts are on the rear lower shock mounts? Are they 1/2" or 5/8"?

I wonder why? The front ones are 1/2" aren't they?

Very interesting, mine rears are 1/2". The manual says to use 5/8" , But eveything on mine is set up for 1/2". Might be because I have the adjustable shocks. I think I got my kit about a month or so after you Brent.

That would make things a lot easier for me...
That's what I was wondering about....like you said, the manual says 5/8"....but yet the fronts are 1/2". I thought I remembered putting 1/2" bolts on the rears.....but I just couldn't remember.
Syd, you running 10" springs all the way around?
I have the Shell Valley Quik-Set coilovers on the rear...which are basically Aldan look-alikes...but non-adjustable. Anyway....I need to lower the rear almost an inch....but I'm using 10" springs and the coilovers are adjusted all the way down.....no room to lower the ride height. I figure an 8" or a 9" spring would give me the room I need.

Yes Brent, I have 10" springs all the way around. I have them compressed a little over an inch now. I would like to go a little lower, but I'm going to wait a while to see if they settle first.

I've had mine on for awhile....The car hasn't been driven, but they have not settled.
QA1 makes 9" springs. I think they're the ticket.
I'm gonna post a picture of my rear shocks.....the control arm bolts are 5/8" for sure....Look at the head of the coilover bolts and see if you think they're smaller than the control arm bolts. I'm sure they are....but this picture could be playing a trick on me.

This is how the rear shocks are mounted on the SV Coupe, I have QA-1 adjustables and the lower bolt hole is the same as the top, 1/2"
The coupe rear shock bracket is adjustable for ride height, is it the same for the Cobra?
Also I got a great deal on the shocks from http://www.arundelchassis.com They sell QA-1 shocks on ebay and were great to work with.

Well, my untrained "eagle" eye says that the coilover bolt is smaller.
I'm a little confused. My 10" springs are compressed a little over an inch now. It looks like I can compress them probably another 1 1/2" if I wanted to. Are you saying that you can't do that for some reason?

Syd,
I actually measured the larger bolt head on the picture, got the head diameter offline, did some ratios, and figured out the coilover bolt is 1/2". hehehe....I did learn something from school...
Let's see.....
My springs are not compressed.
I'll post another pic so that you can see. Dana says these shocks are 10.25"C and 13.25"E. I have enough room to slide a 10" spring up on the coilover body then put the nut on behind it.
Of course if you use a spanner wrench, you can compress the spring, thereby extending the shock, but you can only extend the shock about 1/4" more....The spring takes up a lot of room...
I'll post another pic so that you can see what I'm talking about.

OK....here's my setup....as you can see the shock is almost fully extended and the spring is sitting down at the bottom of the shock.
In this picture, the rearend is supported (not the frame of the car) so this would be how the shocks would appear if the wheels/tires were on the car and it was sitting on the ground.
The spring takes up the whole coilover and the shock is pretty much extended.
If the shock is indeed a 13.25"E shock, then the ride height in this picture is probably around 13".
If I went to an 8" or 9" spring, I could load the suspension and still have room to run the spring nut down and drop the suspension.
Since you do have the Aldans, they may have a longer extended length....

OK.... Now I get it. Looks like the extended lenth of my shocks are about 1 1/2" longer than yours. Hmmm..... very interesting.

My fronts are 1/2 and my rears are 5/8. Just checked 'em with a caliper. Russ

I'm pretty sure that mine are 1/2" now....I always thought they were....and some pretty detailed examination of some photos kinda confirms it. At least I'm not alone....Syd's are too......

Scott,
What is the ride quality of your coupe with those short control arms to the rear axle?
Thanks,
Mike

The coupe is pretty much in the go cart stage and I can not give an honest opinion yet.
