Newby
Just registered with Club Cobra.
Just trying to figure out how to "post". Hope this message gets there.
New owner. Haven't taken delivery yet. Shell Valley car and Built by Cobra Motorsports in Connecticut.
Been dreaming about ownership of a Cobra for 30 years.
Leaving Honolulu for Massachusetts to pick up and pay for the Cobra I bought sight unseen on Ebay. (just pictures)
Gutsy guy, eh?
Shipping to Hawaii seems to be a near nightmare. No top, no windows......no ship.
Still need insurance. Quote from Progressive was $1200 for 6 months. Is this normal? I know Hawaii is absurd, but this really sounds outrageous.
Ideas? Anyone?
Write anytime, if you take a notion.
Dave

$1200 for 6 months is to much, keep shopping, but your options are limited. The insurer has to be licensed for business in Hawaii, that really limits you. Grundy will insure at a much better price BUT, the car needs to be valued at least $50K. You send them pics and your 'promo' and they will decided the value. Other forms of insurance at 'reasonable' price limits you to 'parades' and driving to and from 'car shows'. Of course the cheapest way is Geico, but they won't offer full coverage, just basic liability. If going with Geico use a name for the car OTHER THAN "Cobra". That word is a red flag. Call it what it is, an ASVE (assembled vehicle) for instance. Of COURSE it is a 'factory' car! It's all in how you word it. The LAST thing you want is a '1965 Cobra 427' The local Cobra Clan looks forward to meeting you sometime! Welcome to the club.
NOTE:
It was the local Cobra Clan that sponsored, testified and pushed through the House and Senate the recent "Cobra Bill". Allowing for the FIRST TIME the legal registration of a replica Cobra on Oahu. Before that? Well, we drove at night mostly and never in large groups, avoided car shows and were 'rebels' in general. Most of us figured out various ways to 'register' our Cobras (NEVER calling them that), it was complicated to say the least.

Wow. You are a wealth of info. I am so naive regarding this subject. I really appreciate you taking your time to provide me with some guidance, etc.
I am still seeking secure parking too. If it's not one thing then it's another. Seem there is no such thing as a "garage for rent". I live downtown in highrise with open parking. OUCH.
I had no idea that registration might be a problem. Thanks to your efforts, maybe it won't be so difficult for this new guy.
Would love to meet anyone else on Oahu, who owns a Cobra. If there are any "get-togethers", etc., I would sure appreciate being informed of time and place. My Cobra should be here in January (with some serious luck).
Thank you again,
Dave

Dave- Although I cannot offer any info on insurance or things of that nature, I wanted to say good luck with getting it there, and keeping it safe. Nice looking car from the pic. Stick with Club Cobra, as this place is a wealth of information, and the people here are great too.
Regards,
Greg

Greg,
Thank you for your comments and message.
Yes, the more I look at this website, the better it gets (as I figure out how to enjoy it.)
Today.....for the first time, I saw and drove the Cobra I had already paid for. I am definitely impressed and to say the least.......THRILLED.
It turned out to be considerably better than I had hoped. I got lucky.
It is now in the original factory (Shell Valley, Nebraska) having a soft top installed so I can ship it to Hawaii.
I probably won't get the car to Hawaii until January, but now that I know what is coming, I am like a little kid at Christmas.
Look forward to hearing from you anytime.
Stay warm.
Dave

My current listing for Hot Rodder 'cruise in's' ends with the last one on Dec. 9, Wendys, Kapolei.
Come next year when you make it to a cruise in ask for the 'list' to keep abreast of the next years schedule. The Cobra Clan doesn't make all of them, but a few are REALLY special and there is generally a good turn out.
Like Mike McKennas 'All Ford' show once a year, thats a must do!

Excaliber,
Well, darn, I will miss Wendy's.
As of today, factory assures me timing to get my new Cobra to Hawaii will not happen until January.......maybe even February. Disappointing, but after waiting 30 years, I guess I will live another two or three months.
McKennas "all Ford" show will be when? After February, I hope.

Dave, just a thought about insurance. If you waited 30 years, I'm guessing you are close to 50 years old and if you are you should check with the AARP Insurance plan, they use The Hartford. I have all my vehicles insured with them and my Cobra costs me $300.00 per year. I'm in Illinois so they know we can only use our cars about 6 months per year and my coverage is for only $35,000.00. with a $1000.00 deductible. I think that's very reasonable.

Cobra Insurance
Ralph,
My office is in Illinois and just a word to the wise. Watch some of the standard markets like Hartford as they write a stated amount coverage and you do not want to have a loss settled this way. The best way is an agreed value coverage which they will not write. You also have to watch the standard policies as they will not insured modifications to a vehicle without a separate coverage. I realize that many of the Cobras are rolling chasis but when you people tell them they have a 1965 Ford Convertible then that can be what the loss is based on, be a shame to get the cost for a Ford Falcon.
Just a couple of thoughts.

Thank you
Robbin,
Thank you for your comment.
Got so many helpful suggestions from Club members.
Ended up with Grundy Worldwide.
Seems like it will work out OK.
Again, thank you,
Dave

Robbin, thanks for the "heads-up!" If you are an insurance agent I definitely respect your "thoughts."
After reading your post I pulled out my policy and what the Cobra is listed as is, "'94 ACE COBRA "VIN# ACE94109xxxxxxxx" with an auto classification of 6721B, whatever that means.
The Cobra is listed on my title as a "1994 ACE COBRA."
Robbin, I'm always willing to learn.
Thanks, Ralph
