Default Please splain it to me??????????????

Okay, I need someone to explain this to me in "PLAIN" dummy english...............LOL.............

On the Ford 5.0 motor with the standard distributor there is a little small grey module/plug that plugs in just before the large plug that plugs into the distributor. What is the purpose of this module?? I know it has something to do with timing but I need to know more?????

ANyone?????????????????

If it's what I think you're talking about it's the "TFI" or Thick Film Ignition module, what this does is control the spark output of your distributor. If you can post a pic of it that may help Earl.

it's a Ford TFI (thick film ignition) module. It is used by Ford to control spark.

I live in CT and have to go through emissions every two years with my 90 Saleen Musatng. I"ve been doing it for 20 years now. Every time I go I have to detune the car and put the cat converters back on. Someone told me many years ago to pull the grey module out before going as it helps get the car through emissions better. Whether it works or not I don't know, but I have been doing it with success for years.

Earl, it seems I remember a Ford recall on these. What was happening was the "thick film" was drying out and allowing moisture to get into electronics. Might try a search of TFI recalls on some of the other ford forums. The 5.0 guys would be all over it.

Cool timing

Hi,
The 'spout plug' is there to time the engine.
You pull it out when you put a timing light on to set initial timing; the electronic advance is dissabled with the spout plug out.
Perry.

HighPlainsDrifter is correct. This plug only disengages the electonic advance and goes to base toming. About the same as removing the vacuum line from older dist.

Cool short

Hi,
You probably have a short or pinched wire going to pin 36 on the EEC computor, or bent pin, so when you plug it in it shorts out the signal. That wire is shielded so it has a ground flexible shield over the wires.
Perry.

That makes sense, the only thing is, this is all new wiring and it has been checked and triplechecked for shorts, kinks, etc., etc.........

Another question I have is this......when programming the ECU it asked two questions that I am puzzled about.....
1. input trigger.....Positive or Negative
2. spark trigger....Positive or Negative

Both, at this time, are set to Positive.........

Thank you HighPlainsDrifter, I was worried I was the only one who knew what a spout connector was.
