Uh you had it almost correct...
Just remember Tight Ass! Therefor forward tire rotation loosens the spinner. It is the braking action that tightens it. Looking down on the spinner you are hitting it to the Ass to Tighten.

I got to use mine a few weekends ago. I pulled all 4 wheels and cleaned brake dust goo that was all over them. It took almost all day. I only used one side of the hammer and probably have 3 or 4 more full changes (12 remove, replace) cycles on that side. It'll last me a long time.
About lead... When I was a kid our family went fishing alot. We used a lot of sinkers. My dad was a commercial builder, hospitals and nursing homes, and he got rolls of the sheet lead they used in the X-ray rooms. Melted it in a plumber's lead pot and poured it into the sinker molds.
I also leaded a lot of cast iron pipe (using the same lead pot). At that time the building codes still required all underground plumbing (e.g., under a basement floor) to be cast iron. You could transition to plastic above grade. Cast pipe would have "oakum" stuffed into the seam and hot lead poured over that to seal it.

Update... $ Price $ increase
Just sent my money to Ted. 6# lead hammer now $45. He said the initial price of $35 was a prmo and with shipping cost and paypal expense, the price had to go up. Still a good deal for us compared to the other hammers on the market.

Bump..
Just ordered one myself after contacting Ted and confirming availability. I've been using a rubber mallet from Sears and scared myself a little this past weekend when I nearly wore myself out after trying to get my wheels off...guess I tightened them a little too much the last go-round. Should solve that problem now since I'll be using the lead mallet from now on..
I found this video to be very helpful and the sound change to indicate that the spinners are tight was what prompted me for the need of Ted's Lead hammer..

I've had one of these hammers for 11 years now. It's pretty used up. What does it typically cost to ship one of these guy there and back. I'm in Connecticut. Or should I just buy a new one?

I just did one earlier this year $25 plus shipping which you will pay either way if new or repaired.
If I remember right it was only like 35 bucks total.

So far this auto-x season, I have about 16 or 18 full wheel changes (all four) on my hammer and it's performing fantastic. Olthoffs video is definitely a good guide and I have yet to loose a wheel...lol... Couple smart blows to loosen, and wrist-flick technique for tightening....works great. Don't forget the anti-sieze.

After 11 years of use my 6 pounder was ready for some R&R. I sent it back to Ted at American Hammer (about $10 postage). Within a week I had a brand new one back at the house ($25 included the postage).

There's no mistaking what country they're from. It says AMERICAN HAMMER on one side of the handle and a number to call for recasting on the other. It just worked for me where nothing else would. I got the right tool and info off CC, thanks guys.

Mine sure did the trick on my Kirkham. When I was done I just hammered the
head back to its original shape with a ball peen hammer. Not that it was that
out of shape from 3 wheels but I thought I'd try to bring it back before it got
too far out and it seems to work. Don't want to mail it back unless I have to!
