Lubro Moly Full Synthetic Oils
Spring has almost sprung and I need around 24 quarts of oil to do all the cars. I was shocked (well, not really) that Mobil 1 0W40 is at $8-$9 a quart.
I've had good experience with this oil and grade and use it on all my cars.
My good friend Joe of Manning Imports helped me out and canvassed his wholesale oil distributors and the best price we could get was $7.47 a quart. 3 of them recommended Lubro Moly, claiming that it has as good if not better qualities as M1 or Redline; and at a better price. They sell them in 5-Liter jugs, and it comes out to around $6.50/quart. A German-manufactured oil (marketed as Liqui Moly in Europe), it is a very popular oil amongst BMW and Porsche enthusiasts. The Mercedes stealership is married to M1 so they recommend that but say that Lubri Moly does meet their minimum specification requirements for use in all Mercedes Benz products.
Any experience or technical info about this oil out there?
Cheers!

I buy my Mobil 1 at BJ's Warehouse Club. It was 32.99 for a 6 pack just a few weeks ago.

Mobil 1 five qt. jug for $22 at Walmart. Do the math...and it's not from China.

Redline oil has 50% more ZDDP (1200PPM) than does Mobil1. However if you want the Mobil1, Rich is correct about the price of Mobil1 at Walmart - $22 for 5 quarts.
Redline is usually available at Amazon.com.

Get the Mobil 1 and then add this:

best of both worlds.

CobraEd:
The ad you linked is misleading.
"After 70+ years, the EPA mandated that all domestic oil producers remove ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate) from all conventional and synthetic motor oil."
ZDDP levels have been reduced. For overhead cam engines the lower levels probably don't matter. For us flat tappet guys it does.

I agree if you have a "modern" engine with roller rockers and lifters there is zero reason for the "additional" ZDDP. Look at your car engine you drive 150,000 miles. In addition the additive package deteriotes over mileage, with that being said if you are changing your oil every 2K miles / once a year you could get away with todays oil since you will not deplete the package in 2K miles more like 5k miles.

I didn't read the verbiage. I guess they got it wrong?? (I still did not read it) but the bottom line is, you can buy their ZDDP product and add it to any oil you want. Thus, . . . you have your favorite oil AND all the ZDDP you need.

Mmmm, no info on Lubro Moly, eh?
I think folks didn't read what I was really looking for...0W40...and Mobil doesn't package this in 5 quart jugs.

Yeah I can do the Math, but I can't find Mobil1 0W40 in jugs and at that price at Walmart. 10W30, yes. 0W40 was 6.97 per quart.

Okay, I got it.
I do wonder, however, about the need for 0W40 motor oil. While not the most common number on the shelf, isn't this formula best for sub-freezing outdoor temps? Maybe extremely tight bearing clearances? Please share your theory.

No disrespect intended, but this thread is essentially about approximately $24.

Actually, to correct myself, the difference is now $0.47/qt or about $11.
If I had Patrick's money, then I'd throw mine away.

My humble theory on 0W40 is really based on the fact that maybe 80% of wear on the engine moving parts is due to lack of lubrication at start up. Considering the length of time that our cars sit between startups, the faster (due to lower "0" viscosity when cold) the oil gets to these mating surfaces, the healthier it is for the engine. I installed a 3 quart Accusump to aid in startup pre-lubrication as well.
Additionally, I think it was Bob in Ct that came upon a test article that M1 0W40 actually is thicker under operating temps than M1 15W50. Go figure...

Oh and just to confuse the issue further, I clicked on a "sponsored link" here in CC and saw this...after claiming that the new Castrol Edge outperformed Mobil 1
