"Nisonger Instruments" questions ?
I've always wanted the correct looking gauges in my Cobra, but the prices are very high. I can now get a great price on the full set of electronic from Nisonger Instruments. Copied from the original Smith gauges, the look great.
I have some questions. Why was the MPH gauge run reversed, in the counter clockwise direction ? Can you hook up a small in-dash, shift light to work with the gauge, or just connect to the MSD distributer ? What is the correct layout for the 7 gauges ? Just a two year warranty ? Anybody have any issues ? I have the VDO electronic gauges now, is there a way to dial in my cars correct mileage, with the new electric speedo gauge ? |
Speedometer was reversed for English gauges and American cables. If the wrong wind cable is used on speedometer it pumps oil out of the trans and up the cable.

What would be the wrong cable, anything but theirs ?
Do I need to get their Custom Speedometer Cable and the Smiths Oil Pressure Lines ? I have the VDO gauges now, and assume the cable is from them also. |
Peter used to own Contemporary Classic Motorcars and is a fabulous guy to work with. I have known him forever (I have a Contemporary since 1991). I believe that the speedo was reversed because with its location in the dash, the lower speeds are hard to read in a standard speedo because the left bezel edge obscures the vision. I have used other speedo cables with no problems, but the Nisonger cable will be the correct length (both inside and out). If the inner cable is too long, it will bind and either break or make the speedo jumpy.
Do Not hesitate in buying from Nisonger. They are extremely competent, fair, and honest. |
It may take me a while to get used to the speedo & tack location if ,....I mount them in accordance to the originals. :confused:

I assumed you were doing a Comp layout dash. If you need more info on that or street dash let me know. The cable several brands use is Napa part number 615-1644 or buy it at Rockauto.

I assume so but, I'll have to see where both the tack and speedo feels better to me, when switched in positions. I also want to see the oil psi clearly. The original locations will be fine for the rest of the gauges.
All the info you have would be great. I may just install a small one to the left of the steering column, but I don't know if my left arm would get in the way. I'll have to sit in the seat and see how it looks. I may end up making a new stainless steel insert for proper placement of all the gauges ? Any ideas about a shift light ? why do you need a shift light......you have a tach.......or dont you look at your guages when you out showing off.....hahahaha......put it under the dash just under the tach...they are bright enough that you should see it anyway....

I usually shift by the engine sound, and get pretty close. :cool: |

I really like the original looks of the cobra gauges so, if it comes down to it, I'll do without the light. I haven't used one since building the car back in
2001, it wouild just be nice. |
you have the three small lights that you use for the h-beam and turn signal ind. why couldent you add a yellow light the same size to use as a shift light?????

Yep, you got it. That's where I said just to the left of the steering collum. I figured the same size or a bit larger red light.

I would think you would want to keep the light as small as possible so it dosent blind you when it flashes in your face....you may want to test a couple of them to see which will work best....an LED would probably be best....

I'm so,ooo happy. I talked with Peter Bayer and bought the full set with the 180 mph reverse speedo ! He gave me a smolin deal because of the advertising I'll have for him with the engine build and my Cobra.
By the way, it's true, he's a great guy. ;) Only one problem. I need to find out what type of fuel sending unit I have ? I hate to pull it off the tank but, I don't know what else I can do to find out. He does have one that won't bounce the gauge needle around. I've seen a post somewhere here on CC, where you can get the same size light as the turn signals, but in LED's but, I can't find it. :confused: Yeah, you watch me on Saturday buddy, I WILL MELT ! :p Supposed to be 90 degrees. Happy I won't be racing, and with a helmet. **) I may have to put ice down my shorts ! :eek: |

Google LED automotive lighting and see what happens....and keep your shorts out of it... |
