supercharging a carb'd 302 ??
I've been considering supercharging my 302 which has an Edelbrock 600 CFM 4bbl. I know A.T.I. (Procharger) makes them for carb'd Chev'ys but only with Holley carbs.
Looking for the most HP for the $$, supercharging seems the way to go but maybe too many mods will be required.
Thanks for the input.

A Paxton S/C should fit under there...call Paxton for info/guidance/ pricing. A former SPF owner added a Paxton to his SPF w/ 351 SVO Windsor crate. Unit fits under the hood as it did in the 60's. He got his from Paradise Wheels in California, noted for Paxton sales , service and guidance. His total installation cost of all ancillary pieces required, the S/C, bracketry, rebuilt carb (implosion proofed) etc was about $4K as I recall and took hp from 385 to 510. Neat thing about it , you can sell the car later with or without the Paxton and not have a shelf full of parts laying around the house from trying to get extra hp some other way (ie, heads etc). It is on my Xmas list to do the same thing if Santa is so kind. Good Luck. Bill.

Paxton
Bill - Thanks for the reply. I spoke with the local Paxton dealer and also called the Paxton factory. They are telling me they no longer make superchargers for engines with carbs only E.F.I.
Obviously, I don't want to go with the Roots style - won't fit.

There is a small block FFR sporting a small B&M roots type blower. Just fits under the hood.

the recent purchase of Paxton must have resulted in them not doing carb versions if they told you they do only EFI now. That is indeed news to me. However, call Paradise Wheels in Calif...he restores original Paxton units and I would have to believe that he is the most logical source for one of their units (carb type) as he has been doing it for years...only EFI huh, hmmmm...that screws up my plans for my SPF and mod 65 Mustang K-Code ...about the time I can afford to buy the S/C Paxton (Carb) units they will be so rare that the price will be UP UP UP....just my luck...buy high and sell low is my motto, not from intent but from experience ! Vortech blower
Why not contact Vortech, they make a whole range of good superchargers, check out their web site. Installing it is only a matter of plumbing it to the carb.

Sure, their kits are designed for EFI models but that is no reason not to instal a Vortech blower to a carb. This is the one I installed:
www.vortechsuperchargers.com/units/sq-trim.html
Like I said, it's a matter of plumbing the blower outlet directly into your carb. You'll have use something like a K&N cone type air filter out in front of the radiator to grab the cold fresh air and duct it into the blower. The blower will be driven by the crankshaft pulley, that may require a replacement pulley for an 8 rib K-type belt.

Supercharging 302 W/carb
Vortech and Paxton both make a pressure box for carbs sold for marine applacations. The answer is you will have to piece a system together to make this thing work. Changing brackets and pullys on the A.T.I. is a option if you can order most of the blower and pressure box equipment without the chevy kit stuff. Making your own pressure box out of aluminum carb spacer plates with homebuilt hats works very well too. I've got a million ideas on how to make this thing work but if cost is a driver here then I think I would look at a powerdyne pump with a homebuilt pressure box. And even though it costs a bit more, a Vortec popoff is a must! Some of the stuff you will need to peice this together is at hardware stores and your supercharger supplier can give you leads on pullys and brackets. This is a very complex subject but if you look at it like it's a boat engine the trip is much easier. I've posted several times in this forum on this subject and there is many other posts on just this subject , so a quick search may yield results. I can be reached by e-mail if you choose to chase this beast down.

recommended reading
I suggest strongly that anyone contemplating installing a supercharger reads "Street Supercharging - How to Install and Tune Blowers" by Pat Ganahl ISBN 1-884-089-21-1
