Default Optima battery choice

For the folks using Optima brand batteries, which type did you choose and why? Yellow, red, cca rating etc ?
Thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the Optima batteries are color coded. The Red Top batteries are automotive use, the Yellow top are made for RV/Deep cycle use, and the Blue top batteries are for Marine/Boat starting use.

Of course, there is no rule against using a Marine or RV battery in a car, but they work best in different charging situations and parameters of use.

Just my 2 pesos.

Bob

2 Red top batteries,first one "only" lasted 7 years,so far, 3 or 4 years on #2......

Not a good idea to use the Marine battery in a car of any type.......

the yellow top is a dual purpose battery, not just for boats.

I've had a number of batteries in my Arntz. My first red top Optima lasted a couple of years but no battery likes to sit for very long. I did a big body off project that took six months and that killed the first one. Also, I have learned that sitting on a concrete floor will suck the life out of a battery. I keep a Battery Tender charger on mine now. It is always ready to go.

I've been using the blue top in mine for more than 4 years without any issues.

Why are you saying it's not a good idea? It's only a battery.

Marine batteries normally do not have the cold cranking power of a regular auto battery and are designed for a slow discharge as in trolling motors and other marine uses, also designed for a slow recharge.......

They will work assuming you have a large enough one for your cranking needs, just not the best choice...

I seem to remember a few recent threads of people complaining about the new optimas not being nearly as good as the old ones.

Uno mas. I've had my machine for almost 10 years and still have the same red top battery. Most reliable battery I've ever had. Hope I haven't cursed it. Rich

I've had an Orange top since I built my 289 in 2001 and it is still going strong. Since I know I will have to replace it soon (at least in the next five years) I have been researching options. Optima had big problems with plate separators shorting after they moved to Mexico and that gave them a bad name. That problem got fixed and as near as I can tell they have been good after that. I think the problem period was around 2006. I still wonder if they are made as well as they were before about 2005. When the time comes I will also consider an Odyssey.
