Default What is the best way to get into the 11's?

As i am scouring the net to find the right manufacturer of cobra to buy, ive made a list of all of the things i want to have in my cobra. One of the biggest things is that i want it to be able to run 11's flat. I still cant decide whether or not to go auto or manual tranny. I know the auto will give me more consistant times, as well as run a little quicker. I want to stay small block, so what is a horse power number i should try and achieve to put a cobra replica car in the very low 11's? What cubic inch displacement would be a good one to have? Stroked or not? I am totally new to ford motors, seeing ive always been a die hard Chevy man. Will 600 hp be enough? Would a Supercharged motor be very reliable? What are your thoughts to get into the 11's? Also, i was looking at different cobras and love the look of this one i came across. Can someone tell me the manufacturer name?

Just my cents,
If want to go quick in a straight line and not to worried about freeway speed. I recommend a 2spd Powerglide with a 4:10 rear.
As for a powerplant, since you want to stay with a small block
go with a 351 stroke it out to 427. Then find the lightest but safest Cobra.

Runinhorn;

Unique Motorcars has a red 427 SC with a NASCAR 358cid that has gone 11.77 though mufflers on Hossier street TDs. Has a Richmond 5 sp, and missed 3rd gear.

While your question is somewhat open, what else do you plan to use the car for? If you are going to use the car on the street and have a little fun away from the track, I might suggest that you consider a big block (460 or 502) with a Tremec TKO five speed manual transmission. The reliability and low maintenance of these near 600 horsepower engines is amazing to me.

I make this recommendation based on the performance of my 2000 Superformance with a 460 crate motor. The car is very dependable in traffic, parades and when just crusing around. However, bolt on a set of 28 by 10.5 MT slicks, adjust the shocks to the hardest setting and you can run in the 11's all day long. Last summer in 100 degree heat the car ran 5 passes at 11.8 seconds and 120 miles per hour on the way to a runner-up finish at the Fun Ford event in Gulfport, Ms.

Anyway, for what it is worth, you might consider the big block.

That's the way...Little shot of juice keeps 'em all at bay! Do up a 351W right, and if you're good enough off the tree...ya just might be able to break in to the 10's...with a little juice!!

I once ran 11.54@118mph launching at 2100rpm with
crate 351W, ported heads, 450-460 HP, 3.73 gears,
live axle,Tremec with 275x50x15 BFG DR's. I passed thru at around 5400, shifting at 6200rpm/chip@6400. The tires were at 16 psi. My 60 foot was 1.7 which could have been slightly improved with a higher launch. I drove it home in one piece instead!

Runninghorn Put a big block in it with alum, heads,waterpump, 125hp nos kit and you will be in the ten"s with slicks and not have to 7000 rpm a small block. Double vemon doesnot show the whole picture, while his car is a master piece of engineering the six foot wheelie bars are not in the picture. I have seen this car run Every launch it wants to stand on the rear bumper and runs 11's all day in 95 temputures on the track. I know one of these days that motor is going to get bigger and badder. Low ten's or high nine's are not out of the question. McLoed make's a soft loc clutch that leaves like an automatic and run faster with a five speed. The clutch cost about 1300.00$ but you leave at 5 grand and not blow the tires off the car. I am putting one in my car, they say it will knock about 1/2 second off a 12 second car 1/4 mile racing when set up CORRECTLY. Good Luck with your new car

Friend of mine runs a Triumph TR-6 with 351W power. Solid lifter cam, Edelbrock Heads, carbureted, beefed C-4 auto, 4.56 gears. Runs consistent 10's.

I'd use a lightened Classic Roadsters for this. 94" wheelbase, and a frame that would embarass a pickup or 4 x 4 for strength.

You could use a big block, but you don't have to. A 5.0 with a Vortec will do it. The trick is hooking it up. Get some help here on a rear suspension setup that will hook up, and not break.

there are Steel bodied FE Fords turning those times on pump gas with no nos or supercharging and a heck of a lot more weight. Pounds Galaxies get's there on pass after pass. 427, toploader, lighweight 1963 galaxie. the problem withe the cobra cars boils down to one thing, chassis and rear suspension design, no more. a motorsports 460/514 in the crate from ford will get you there not tempermental, and very reliable. my old 351C, toploader, with hoosiers gets into the 11.XX's, but a small block is an expensive way to get to the high tens. please no sb vs bb flares.

Try using this engine from D&S Racing

600 cubic inches and 950 horsepower.

410 gears??? With 950 hp??? How about 3.08 gears with a 2spd powerglide. With an engine like that, 410 gears would be like driving on a frozen lake!

Ed, you're probably right. Have been a manual trans guy all my life. With some AA/FD tires and a 2-sp auto, it would go mid to low 9's. You would need wheelie bars and a chute per NHRA rules though.

11s???? You can do it with a single turbo easy ! Ya I know its bad enuff with the SB an BB debate soooo I thought I would throw a lil ol V6 in This is my daughters eng from a ......... NO wont start an eng "debate" She ran 11.5s @ 118 in street trim in a 3500# car.....Imagine what this could do in a Cobra!!

Hey Blue 66 that looks like a Grand National motor. John Spina ran one back in 95 in a cobra stock and turned 11.1 with the 200R4 trans on a muffler. He put a straight pipe on it and with no back pressure the car ran 11.6 It's a great setup or a cobra. Low maintance and fun to play with. Put good pistons and rods in it and 20 psi of boost and it will go in the nine's. You can sneak up on everybody with that setup except twin turbo SB fords Hope you get it in a car good luck Rick Lake

Yes its a GN motor...These little critters take a beating. We have 6 of them BUT still have ol feelings for the Cobra...427s are awesome but I want a "beater" to have fun with. I have seen John's car at the Buick events (coooool)

Thought I'd throw this into the discussion.

OK so its a 6 but its got 4 sub 11 runs on it with NO juice. With the gear change it (I hope) will do mid 10's.
