Sidepipes

It seems that the sidepipes I have an my Midstates 351 have very small internal pipes inside them. I would think that there would be a performance penalty to that. Can I get pipes that have a larger internal pipe, and would they be MUCH louder?

I have 4 inch inside diameter side pipes on my Cobra with a stroked 351 Windsor racing engine and I just got some glass pack mufflers and stripped them down and put them in the pipes. I lost very little due to back pressure and they muted that sharp crackle down to the point I can now drive past the highway patrol and they don't pay much attention. It is still quite loud if I am on it in the first four gears.

Try a search on mufflers, side pipes, and look in the Classic Roadster mfg area. Mufflers have been beat to death several times and all your questions, and some you don't have yet will be answered.

Check the Classic Roadsters forum. The sidepipe/muffler issue has been beaten to death, and we're still beating on it.

Enzio of Arizona Exhaust is semi retired now, but still makes 30" glassbacks with 3" cores for Cobras. He gets $ 28 apiece for them. JCWhitney sells 30" glasspacks with 3" cores for $38 apiece. Reports are, they're a little loud. Guy in our club has a set & I'll go listen.

powerpackmufflers.com, also in Arizona, makes a 30" glasspack, 4" case, 2 1/2", 2 1/4", and 2" cores which may prove a little quieter. They're $29.55 apiece. Likely spring for a pair of the 2 1/2" ers to keep the beast quiet, but let it breathe. Street Rod folks, nice people over the phone.

Stainless Specialties makes similar mufflers, but the case length is only 23". Don't know if they'd make a 30" or not. Mufflers run $100 - $150 each. Complete set of headers and sidepipes for a Cobra (at least they know what a Cobra is) $1600. Bought a piece of stainless exhaust tubing from them for radiator plumbing.

Wish suppliers would tell us when they sell us these expensive parts, that the product has certain limitations that we could then choose to change or leave alone before spending 2x - 4x the cost of the part having it chromed or coated. Now I gotta spend another $50 or $60 apiece, on a $30 muffler to recoat the damn thing, after spending $xxx for the sidepipe coating job, and the hacksaw job and more expensive parts in the trash can, plus UPS's cut in this whole deal.
