Tips on Double Flaring Brake Lines

Fellas,
I found this on the internet and it too was around $385 or so. I was shocked when I found out Snappy has them for $308.00! Yes it is pricey for an occasional use, but it does work nice!

I bought a 25 foot roll of 3/16 steel. At 11 bucks CDN its cheap.
IF I can roll it out into nice straight pieces great I may go with it. Too bad I don't have tubing benders that small.
Curious to know what all you guys used?? I assume 3/16 is more common? If so thats better for hooking up to the fittings etc.

The only way to cut the tube is with a saw. A tubing cutter
does not cut the steel, it displaces and work hardenes the
end of the tube. I thought this would help alot a cobra
people make a small job not so tuff. Good-Luck

Thanks Mikestang..everyone's tips and experiences help guys like me about to make the move...Never really thought about your tip as I do use the tubing cutter alot at work. ( another apllication)

I do know that the burr is a big deal and will be cleaning up these ends very well....

A local rental shop rents out a double flaring tool set... at 7 bucks a 1/2 day we shall see if its a POS or not...LOL It isn't SS so it should work.

Turns out our local Canadian Tire store has a tool lending program...they will lend out a decent double flaring set for 48 hours no charge...just a visa # for if it doesn't come back in time.

I replaced a couple of brake lines over the weekend using Summit's double flare tool ($39). Mikestang's suggestion to cut the line with a saw instead of a tubing cutter was HUGE! I took some emory paper to the end of the line to rough it up a bit, tightened it down evenly, reamed the end a bit, put a drop of oil on the tool, and made sure I didn't over-tighten the flares. Perfect every time. Soooooooo much easier. I can't see how a $350 tool would make much difference.

Forget double flaring. Switch all you fitting over to AN and live happily forever. Have fun and try to remain calm!

Perserverance and a cheap double flaring tool from the local auto parts store came through. I was hesitant, but looking at the design of the tool, I could tell it would do the job easier. Cost me $15.95 and is from performance plus. I broke one of the adaptors when doing one of the lines, but it came with a lifetime warranty. I used the adaptor from my other flaring tool, which looked the same, and the flares come out almost perfect.

Thanks for all the knowledge shared on brake line flaring. I've spent a long time installing wheel sensors and wiring up my ABS system to the Cobra,this weekend I'll do the hydraulics. With all this knowledge, nothing can go wrong.
